With new books of all genres and a comfortable reading space, our scholars can truly explore and interact with texts that engage their interests and provide academic rigor. Pop Art in 2nd Grade ✨
•
•
As we wrap up our first unit in ELA, I wanted students to remember that school is far more than just reading a book or memorizing math facts. School is art, socialization, health and fitness, and most importantly, finding who you are as an individual. Today, my kiddos learned about Andy Warhol and his contributions to art and culture with pop paintings. They are creating their own pop art to reflect who they are as an individual and will write about why art is important is school. I can’t wait to see their final products 💛

In ELA, we are learning about the importance of school and communities!
•
•
We kicked this week off by reading the story, then creating our own dot art like Vashti! Underneath our art, we demonstrated our understanding of story elements like characters, setting, and plot. We also demonstrated that we know the difference between main idea and central message by stating what we learned from the story!
Art is important in education, but also in life, as it is a form of expression!

Literature used in the classroom typically reflect the lifestyles and experiences of only a small percentage of students. Children should be exposed to culturally relevant literature, which provides representation of their culture and lifestyles in the text they read. Culturally relevant texts provide students with insight to experiences and characteristics that may tackle the tough subjects they face daily. It was also found that culturally relevant materials promote academic success and competence & appreciation of their culture. Topics discussed in culturally relevant literature includes race and ethnicity, trauma and assault, violence, substance abuse, self-identity, poverty, and health. Below are a few culturally relevant books that children can read with family and guardians, in educational settings, or by themselves. The links to purchase these amazing reads are included as well!
