Today we’re spotlighting FranU DNP-NA alum from the Class of 2019, Nicholas McCullough, who is currently serving as the president of the Louisiana Association of Nurse Anesthetists. Keep reading to learn more about the work and advocacy Nick is doing.

Nick is the owner and operator of MAC Anesthesia, a mobile office-based anesthesia practice providing anesthesia services throughout Acadiana. He is passionate about giving both providers and patients the option to safely have procedures performed in the office setting while still receiving high-quality anesthesia care in a comfortable, familiar environment.

One surprising skill CRNAs need (that people don’t always expect): customer service. While it may once have been true that the patient was our only “customer,” today, our customers also include surgeons, surgical techs, circulators, administrators, and office staff. Kindness, professionalism, and consistently excellent anesthesia care matter.

Nick became involved in LANA leadership after attending a LANA Annual Meeting as an RRNA at FranU. He credits early support from LANA leadership as a key reason he stayed involved. After serving on the LANA Board for four years, he felt called to step into the presidency to advance the profession and create space for new leaders to rise.

Nick reminds CRNAs: “If you are not at the table, you are on the menu.” Advocacy gives CRNAs the opportunity to educate decision-makers on the value, safety, and necessity of CRNA-provided anesthesia care.

Advice for current SRNAs: Stay focused and keep moving forward. The work is hard because the stakes are high. Patients give up control to you every day, and preparation matters. Commit to being a lifelong learner, because the only constant in anesthesia is change.

One word to describe being a CRNA: Stewardship
