A great idea to begin the new school year!

A few weeks ago, I introduced the 'I need' box in my classroom as a way for students to ask for help without directly approaching me. They write down their needs on a card and drop it in the box.

In the first week, two students used it to report a bullying incident, which we were able to address. The following week, I tweaked the process by asking all students to submit a card every day—whether or not they had something specific to write. Since then, I've received a wide variety of 'needs'—from requests for supplies and seat changes to after-school help, special handshakes, and even requests for hugs.

What’s truly amazing is that students have started coming to me directly to discuss issues, bypassing the box entirely. After 15 years of teaching middle school, I can say this is the most effective method I’ve used to connect with my students early in the school year. ❤️

" Every child brings something irreplaceable to this world."

We have to stop holding our kids up to one standard of what a “good child” looks like.

Some kids are gentle and observant. They take everything in. They speak softly and they thrive in quiet corners.

Some kids are wild at heart. Full of movement, emotion, and big energy that cannot be boxed in. They do not sit still because they were born to shake things up.

And then there are the ones who are somewhere in the middle. A little loud. A little reserved. Full of curiosity and contradictions.

Every one of them is needed.

This world does not just need rule followers or peacekeepers. It needs dreamers. It needs question askers. It needs fire starters and deep feelers.

We have to stop labeling kids as too much or not enough.

We have to stop calling only the quiet ones good and the bold ones trouble.

Every child brings something irreplaceable to this world.

Let us raise them to believe that exactly who they are is more than enough.

At six years old, little Beverly was put on academic probation after first grade. Her biggest problem was reading. The assigned books were all boring educational stories about polite children. It was thanks to a school librarian's friendly encouragement that the girl finally liked to read.
After college, Beverly began working as a children’s librarian. She still found children's books boring. Dick and Jane weren't at all like lively, curious, funny, angry, unruly real kids.
So Beverly Cleary became an author herself. She wrote Ramona the Pest, Henry Huggins, Ribsy, The Mouse and the Motorcycle --more than 40 books in all. Her books won dozens of awards, sold more than 90 million copies, and are still beloved today.
Not bad for the little girl who didn't like to read.
