Our Readers Theater performance is less than two weeks away, so over the next week we are introducing the four fun stories you can see come to life on October 24! Our first book is ‘Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse’ by Kevin Henkes. Lilly loves school and her favorite teacher, Mr. Slinger, until her new favorite musical purse distracts the class and has to be taken away. Can she find it in her heart to forgive him, and get her purse and its contents back?

Midcoast Literacy’s offices and library will be closed on Monday, October 12 in observance of Indigenous Peoples’ Day. Maine is home to four federally recognized Indigenous tribes – Maliseet, Mi’kmaq, Passamaquoddy and Penobscot – known collectively as the Wabanaki Nation. You can learn more about the Wabanaki Nation on the Wabanaki Alliance’s website: https://wabanakialliance.com/. We will re-open on Tuesday, October 13.

We are just three weeks away from our Readers Theater performances of ‘Mercy Watson to the Rescue’, ‘Bears Don’t Share!’, ‘It’s Raining Bats and Frogs’ and ‘Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse’ on October 24! Have you bought your tickets yet? Our staff have been busy creating book-inspired craft activities for the whole family to enjoy before the show. Create a bear mask ready for ‘Bears Don’t Share!’, have your face painted like Mercy Watson, or find witch Delia casting spells in our scavenger hunt! Tickets are just $10 per person or $35 for a family (up to 8 people), and available on our website at midcoastliteracy.org or by calling 207-443-6384. We hope to see you there!

Our success story this month features twin brothers Eli and Noah of Wiscasset. We first met the boys three years ago, when Summer Books Coordinator Robin Buczkowski expanded the program’s reach to more locations in Lincoln County. Eli, Noah, and their mother, Mindy, became instant regulars, selecting free books from the bins in the back of Robin’s “Summer Books Mobile.” Now, this fall, Noah and Eli have enrolled in Read Together, our free tutoring program for children, and will begin twice-weekly sessions with their tutors in October. We look forward to seeing how Noah and Eli continue to flourish as they take advantage of a second Midcoast Literacy program!

To round off we are celebrating our Read With Me program, which provides families in Head Start and Early Head Start classrooms with free books and the skills to develop strong read-aloud techniques at home. This early intervention is crucial; by preschool, many children from homes with few books already show gaps in vocabulary, narrative skills, and language exposure (NCES, 2022). This fall, a brand new Head Start classroom has opened at Perryman Village, Brunswick, providing early literacy intervention for families who live there and the wider community. Midcoast Literacy already connects with families at Perrryman during Summer Books, and we are so excited to see them at Read With Me as well!

Did you know that increasing a person’s literacy skills from Level 1 (the lowest level) to Level 2 makes it 50% more likely that they will live above the poverty line? This , we’re featuring three adult literacy programs that we’re expanding in midcoast Maine to reach more people who need our support.

✅ We are adding new classes to our Workplace Literacy program, helping more new Mainers gain job-specific literacy skills.
✅ We are growing the number of Adult Basic Education learners who receive our help.
✅ We are in the process of implementing a new program at Lincoln Academy, supporting their international students.

This week is Adult Education and Family Literacy week! serves to promote access to adult and family literacy services and to celebrate the adults and families who are fulfilling their potential through literacy education. Tickets are on sale now for our 7th Annual Readers Theater performance, happening Saturday October 24th! Join us for a fun-filled afternoon and see live performances of four children’s books: ‘Mercy Watson to the Rescue’, ‘Bears Don’t Share!’, ‘It’s Raining Bats and Frogs’ and ‘Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse’, at Morse High School. Starting at 1pm before the show, and at intermission, we’ll have face-painting, bookmark-making and a scavenger hunt inspired by the books! International Literacy Day, celebrated on September 8, was established by UNESCO 60 years ago this year. The day serves as a reminder that access to education and the pursuit of literacy is a human right, and that literacy is key to both individual empowerment and a more equitable society. We have made huge strides in world literacy in the last 60 years, but the most recent figures from the World Education Statistics 2025, highlighted below, suggest more can be done globally and at home.

What will you do to promote literacy in your community? You could improve a child or adult’s life by volunteering as a tutor: our tutor trainings are coming up in September and October!
