Band Two is making fascinating connections between the underground City of Ember and our own community right here in Illinois! Challenge your students to compare the cultural universals of their current novel study to their real-world lives:

Economics & Jobs: How does Ember’s rigid system of assigned jobs and resource scarcity compare to the variety of local businesses and community helpers we see along the Fox River?

Food & Agriculture: While Ember's citizens rely on shrinking storerooms of ancient canned goods, how does our access to local Illinois farms and grocery stores completely change the way we eat and gather?

Shelter & Architecture: Ember’s underground structures are slowly failing, but how are our local homes in the Tri-Cities specifically designed to keep us safe and comfortable through all four Midwest seasons?

Band Two is diving into an incredible week of global exploration, deep-sea discovery, and hands-on problem-solving!

Global Cultures & Literature: We are researching the economics, food, and traditional shelters of Ireland, Mexico, Moldova, and Belize, while continuing to unravel the underground mysteries in City of Ember.

Marine Science & Math: Students are tracking Great White sharks to calculate accurate scale drawings, working through personalized algebraic and decimal challenges, and building a massive ocean habitat wall model.

Robotic Navigation: We are coding Sphero robots to accurately traverse latitude and longitude grids across a simulated ocean floor.

STREAM & Community Action: From crafting with the Cricut and hosting a Mini Math Festival to mapping out Batavia in chalk and playing ocean animal tag, we are keeping our minds and bodies moving.

What happens to an ecosystem when apex predators take over—or when the primary consumers disappear entirely? Today during community time, our students took marine biology out of the books and onto the concrete with a fast-paced game of Ocean Predator & Prey Tag! 🌊🦈

Between sprints across the “open ocean” to collect energy and dodging hungry predators, we paused for some big ecological questions:

What happens when predator populations boom without enough prey to support them?

How does an ecosystem respond when a link at the bottom of the food chain is removed?

What happens to the balance of life when resources run dry?
Learning complex scientific concepts doesn’t have to mean sitting at a desk—sometimes the best way to understand trophic cascades and food webs is to live them in real time.

The Mysterious Box: If you found a torn, chewed-up secret document just like Lina did, what steps would you take to decode it?

The Blackouts: How is the growing shortage of lightbulbs and the terrifying seven-minute blackout changing the way the citizens of Ember behave?

Taking Action: Doon and Lina are starting to realize the mayor might not have a solution. What would you do if you realized the leaders in charge didn't actually have a plan to save the city?
