At D1 schools subject to the House settlement roster rules, softball has a 25-player roster limit, and the old sport-specific scholarship maximum has been removed. The NCAA Division II Management Council has requested feedback on whether transfer windows should be established for Division II sports and, if so, when those windows should occur. D2 currently is considering significant changes as it aligns portions of its eligibility structure with Division I.

Why should a high school recruit care about the transfer portal? Because transfers and freshmen may be competing for the same roster opportunities.
When talking with coaches, recruits should start asking more specific questions:
How many players are returning? How many freshmen are you recruiting? Are you planning to add transfers at my position?
