H.C. Storm Elementary School

The Olympics are over, but the medal ceremonies roll on!
Fourth and fifth grade students at HC Storm Elementary celebrated a reading feat that began at the start of the school year. Each year, LRC directors from across the district create quizzes based on a statewide list of 20 books and present a reading challenge to students in these grade levels.
Over 53 students completed the challenge by finishing at least 8 books and quizzes, while 18 students received medals for completing all 20 books! Staff treated these students to an after-school celebration with food, giveaways, and games. Check the news story on our website for the list of student winners.

The LRC is a hoppin' place to be during School Library Media Month at HC Storm. Here are just a few snippets: After reading many folktales, our kindergartners built houses out of wood strong enough to withstand the wolf (leaf blower). The fifth graders are passing on their passion for books by making bookmarks for the incoming fifth graders.

🔦Spotlight on HC Storm's Literacy Night! 📚 A great time was had by families, students, and staff last night at the HCS Literacy Night to celebrate the culmination of the "One Book, One School" event revolving around the book, "A Boy Called Bat." Families enjoyed activities such as animal bingo, making origami bookmarks, making a skunk mini bot, writing postcards to animals, and even a visit from Kane Area Rehabilitation and Education for Wildlife- an animal rescue with an actual skunk! Thank you to the Batavia Public Library of Illinois and the Batavia Lions Club for doing screenings and activities.

🔦Spotlight on H.C. Storm Elementary School🤩HC Storm celebrates the "One Book, One School" initiative! Special deliveries of "A Boy Called BAT" were made to each classroom by Principal Milka dressed as "Thor the Skunk" from the book. Families can enjoy a special reading calendar, a website with information and fun activities to participate in, chapter trivia shared over the announcements twice a week, and a family literacy night to culminate the reading on Thursday, March 13th, from 6:00-7:30pm at HCS. A big thank you to the HC Storm PTO for funding this school-wide event!

🔦Spotlight on the H.C. Storm Elementary School "Home School Connection Collection"🥰 HC Storm students and staff are grateful recipients of a $2,000 grant to purchase classroom sets of books through First Book Marketplace this year. The books focus on topics such as racism, connection/community, individuality, uniqueness, welcoming, family, mindfulness, and so much more! The books can be used as a whole class, discussed, and in-class activities done, as well as being sent home for families to participate together. It has been a great way to grow and develop together

👋It is National School Psychology Week! 👋 We have amazing school psychologists at BPS101. School psychologists help students thrive by providing direct support and interventions to students, consulting with teachers, and coordinating care with school counselors and school social workers. Each school building has at least one school psychologist. Contact your school if you have any questions or need additional assistance for your student.

🤩Students in the bilingual program participated in a STEM curriculum pilot that is being developed by Ms. McAlpin. Ms. Day's students built AMAZING 🎪🎟Carnival Games to demonstrate force and motion. Ms. Matos's students came to play and win prizes!

All BPS101 Schools are closed today due to icy conditions. We will be using an emergency/snow day. All activities at RMS and the elementary schools are also canceled. A decision about BHS activities will be made later today. Please be careful if you must travel today.
