The History of Notre Dame

Notre Dame High School, the only Catholic secondary school between Buffalo and Rochester, was the vision of Msgr. Ground-breaking for the $550,000 three floor school was held May 6, 1951. That September, the first class of 58 students – taught by two Sisters of Mercy - began in temporary quarters at St. Anthony’s parochial school. The present school on Union St. opened

on schedule September 3, 1952 when nuns of the Holy Cross order greeted 200 students, nearly half in upper grades from the city’s public schools. The faculty was almost-all religious, Diocesan priests, Consolata fathers, and Felician nuns would teach a family values-based curriculum that included religion, even for the 15-20 percent of students who were not Catholic. The school, which has graduated nearly 4,000 young men and women, remains steadfast and faithful to its mission as it moves into its second half-century. Since 1991, the former diocesan school, losing students and heavily subsidized by the Diocese of Buffalo, had its future secured when the operation and fund-raising were taken over by a local Board of Trustees, and a NDHS Foundation, both bodies served by local volunteer business and professional men and women.

Folks, I am not sure who changed the name. In checking it out, I discovered that 28 people—including myself—have full control over this page. Should the number be reduced? Initially, I planned to post the list but became concerned about data protection. I am going to delete my name from the list. (I prefer not to have this much power 😱)

How did the name of this page change from NDHS, Batavia NY class of 1973 to Thomas Staebell?
Can someone figure out how to change it back?

We have lost a very dear member of our Notre Dame HS, Batavia NY Class of 1973 Family, Joanne Thweatt! Please keep Joanne and her family in your prayers! 🙏

It is with beyond a heavy heart that I share the passing today of Joanne Thweatt.

A proud member of the color guard for the Auburn Purple Lancers, Rochester Crusaders and Hawthorne Caballeros, Joanne was a founding partner of Drums Along the Waterfront who lent her design and organizational talents to our events, creating the souvenir programs, show posters, and credential badges, to name a few. She was also my better half for many years.

I am extremely grateful to Crossroads House of Batavia, NY for providing their care and compassion, and for providing me the opportunity to be by her side in the final days. It's even more meaningful that Crossroads House was started by Kathy Panepento, a member of our drum corps community.

Even though Joanne couldn't speak toward the end, I would play corps music for her, bringing a smile to her face.

Sincerely,
Jack Ga***rd Jr
President., Drums Along the Waterfront

Anyone even vaguely familiar with Notre Dame High School’s athletic and academic excellence over the past six decades surely has heard of Bill “Sudsy” Sutherland, a graduate of the Union Street school who went on to become one of the area’s finest coaches and educators. The legacy of “Suds...
