The more we understand child development, the harder it becomes to look at behavior as something that simply needs to be controlled.
A child’s behavior is often communication long before they have the language, regulation, or self-awareness to explain what is happening inside of them. What looks like defiance may be overwhelm, what looks like “not listening” may be limited working memory, what looks like attitude may be frustration, and what looks like a meltdown may be a nervous system that has reached its limit.
That does not mean every behavior is acceptable, and it does not mean boundaries disappear. It means the response becomes more thoughtful because instead of stopping at, “How do I make this behavior end?” we also ask, “What is my child trying to communicate, and what skill do they need help building here?”
❤️ Sometimes they need a firmer boundary.
❤️ Sometimes they need fewer words.
❤️ Sometimes they need help calming before they can learn.
❤️ Sometimes they need connection, reassurance, or a chance to try again.
❤️ And sometimes they simply need an adult who is willing to look underneath the behavior instead of taking it personally.
Good parenting is not about letting children run the show. It is about leading with enough curiosity to understand what is happening, enough steadiness to hold the boundary, and enough patience to teach the skill beneath the behavior.
The more we listen, the more clearly we can guide. And the more clearly we guide, the more capable our children become of understanding themselves too. ❤️
