Looking through my elementary method Rubank book, I found this enthusiastic comment from my first flute teacher in Brooklyn, Mr. Bach (yes, that was actually his name!) circa 1998. 😂 😀

Happy summer break! ☀️🕶

What a year it has been. I’m so proud of my students, who have been working so hard through another stressful, virtual school year. 📚

I’m finding my students in a renewed state already. Excited to have successfully completely this academic year. Noticing the progress they have made that wasn’t as apparent to them among all the noise. Inspired to continue playing and studying through the summer. 😅

We’ve all gone through a lot in the past year +. I think we’re on the way back to happier times... ❤️ 🎵 What are your creative plans for the summer??

My !

I always had an incredible love for music. In 6th grade, we had the option to join band. I never considered playing an instrument because I didn’t think my parents would support it. Since my friends were joining, I decided to go along. We had some older students performing in band show us the variety of instruments available. I was SHOCKED and impressed by how they were able to read those symbols on music staff and turn them into music! We filled out a theory quiz after a few intro classes and I put my top three choices down for instruments - 1) flute 2) clarinet 3) percussion

I ended up getting accepted into my dream high school, LaGuardia HS for music and art and the performing arts (now ) right next to Lincoln Center and Juilliard in NYC. I have had so many wonderful opportunities and experiences because I started playing flute. Music helped me to believe I could do things I dream, even bigger than anyone in my very modest family of children of immigrants in Brooklyn had done before. I’m so grateful I chose the flute and for where it continues to take me in my life! 🎶

would you share your stories?!
