Each winter, an unknown amount of water from mountain snow vanishes straight into thin air, never making it to the Colorado River. The Sublimation of Snow Project, led by Dr. Jessica Lundquist of the University of Washington Civil & Environmental Engineering, in collaboration with NSF NCAR Earth Observing Laboratory & Aspen Global Change Institute and funded by the National Science Foundation, is on the hunt for the missing water! 20 percent of American households had to choose between basic necessities and heating or cooling their homes in 2020. Research shows that energy insecurity affects low-income households, as well as Native American, Black, and Hispanic households, disproportionately.

Two new federal programs aimed at addressing these energy inequities will provide $9 billion in rebates for residential energy-efficiency upgrades and cost-saving electric appliances.
