It’s been a minute but we’re back with another Meet the Instructor Monday! Introducing one of our percussion instructors, Jacob Hargrove.
Jacob Hargrove is an electrifying percussionist who has paved a unique artistic self and strives to cultivate the same for his students. Jacob has had a diverse career in music, having had many opportunities to perform world-wide and teach across the United States. Born in Memphis, Jacob first developed his music foundation at the local Academy of Percussive Arts, granting him opportunities to perform regularly with the Memphis Repertory Orchestra, Eroica Ensemble, and the Germantown Symphony.
Jacob earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Music Performance at The University of Tennessee at Martin and his Master’s Degree in Music Performance at Bowling Green State University. He has worked with many world-renowned artists performing in masterclasses, including Robert Van Sice, Jisu Jung, Sō Percussion, Sandbox Percussion, Third Coast Percussion, Scott Herring, Mike Sammons, and more.
A key role in Jacob’s career is teaching the next generation of musicians. His teaching philosophy is to provide enrichment through the lens of music. In 2022, he served as a music mentor for the Detroit Symphony Civic Youth Ensembles, granting him opportunities to foster young Detroit musicians’ artistic voices. Jacob has taught marching, concert, and jazz percussion at various high schools and middle schools throughout Tennessee and Ohio. He has also been a teacher at the Academy of Percussive Arts High School and Junior High Percussion Camps, the Bartlett City Schools Instrument Fair, and a global percussion teacher at Bowling Green State University and the University of Tennessee at Martin.
Folkloric West-African diasporic music is a stronghold in Jacob’s career. He has studied and performed various styles of music from Trinidad & Tobago, Ghana, Zimbabwe, Guinea, Brazil, Cuba, and many more countries. He received grants in 2017 and 2019 to study music abroad in Trinidad & Tobago and Ghana respectively, granting him opportunities to perform and study with world-class musicians in those countries. Jacob was the lead steel pan player and band manager for Jamaica Me Happy, where they would play in various venues throughout Kentucky and Tennessee. While studying at the University of Tennessee at Martin, his percussion ensemble was awarded 1st place at the PASIC 2017 World Percussion Ensemble Competition in Indianapolis, Indiana. In addition to performing and studying these styles, Jacob has also taught and led many world music ensembles, including the Falcon Samba Bateria and the various styles for the University of Tennessee at Martin World Percussion Ensemble. He is currently a musician for the Pan-African Theater Ensemble, which presents African and Afro-diasporic theatrical works at various conferences around the world.
He has also performed as a classical percussion soloist and chamber musician in various events and concert series. He performed his debut solo marimba concert in 2020, titled An Afternoon of Marimba, which was a part of the Wood County District Public Library concert series. Jacob has also performed as a soloist and chamber musician for the World Bizarre concert series at the Soleil Garden Center in Union City, the Perform or Die concert series at Howard’s Club in Bowling Green, the PASIC Percussion Ensemble Competition in Indianapolis, the Youth Music Exchange concert series at the University of Trinidad & Tobago, and the Eighth International Conference on Music and Minimalism.
Currently, Jacob is working as the Music Coordinator for the upcoming documentary Victory: The Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 Community. He is collaborating with composers, performers, rappers, and music producers to produce a full length soundtrack of new music for the documentary.
