We have learned of the passing of Charlie Crowley a 2007 NHFETA graduate. Charlie was a dedicated Northwood Fire Explorer with a true passion for firefighting. The NHFETA staff remembers Charlie talking about his dream of becoming a firefighter just like his father and uncle. He served as a Northwood firefighter and became an EMT. Although we now know Charlie died last year in December, we honor him and keep his family, friends and fellow firefighters in our thoughts and prayers.

Sadly, we have learned of the passing of one of our NHFETA Alumni - Joshua Parsons. Josh was a Merrimack Fire Explorer who attended NHFETA for 3 years - 2009, 2010 and 2011. Josh was always smiling, making his fellow Cadets laugh and being an awesome team member. Some of our current NHFETA staff were NHFETA Cadets with Josh. Our Staff remember Josh as a wonderful young man and Cadet. Josh will be greatly missed, but never forgotten. Our thoughts and prayers are with Josh’s wife and family.

Recruitment and retention challenge many Fire Departments and EMS agencies. This is a very relevant discussion occurring at local and national Chiefs’ meetings. Fire/EMS Exploring offers two levels of youth involvement - Clubs for youth 10-14 years old and Posts for 14-20 years old. There are also other youth programs available through different national agencies. Although there has been a decline in youth interest in recent years, there are still youth interested in Fire/EMS. Harnessing, mentoring, encouraging and fostering the enthusiasm of these curious and passionate young adults may promote and support public safety and community service in the future.

New Hampshire fire departments are struggling to retain their volunteer and on-call firefighters, a group they heavily depend on in emergencies.

Sadly, we must announce the cancellation of the 2019 NHFETA due to low response and enrollment. This was an extremely difficult decision to make but be assured it was made with careful consideration of all the applicants and the overall experience NHFETA is known to provide. After exploring various alternatives for operations, logistics, resources and financial obligations, we ultimately determined we would not be able to provide the experience every applicant deserves with the same NHFETA standards and expectations due to the lack of applications.

In 2018, NHFETA faced a similar challenge with fewer applications, but we were enthusiastic, optimistic and believed the adjustments made to the 2019 program would attract more young adults to attend. As we planned for the 2019 NHFETA, we were excited to provide an enhanced program for all skill levels with improved hands on experiences and a consistent focus on safety, health and wellness. We thought strongly promoting the 2019 NHFETA through various methods, would reach enough potential Cadets to have a successful 2019 NHFETA. Despite these efforts, the minimum requirement for attendance was not met. We do not anticipate receiving enough additional applications to administer the 2019 program either.

We recently learned that there is a significant decrease in NH Fire/EMS Explorers, Posts and Programs. As members of local Fire/EMS agencies, we are also greatly aware of the recruitment challenges each Fire Department and EMS agency faces. A decreased interest of young adults to serve as Firefighters and EMS providers does not improve this situation. Our goal for the 2019 NHFETA was to offer an exceptional opportunity for young adults to experience life as a new fire recruit while gaining the skills necessary to be successful in the future Fire Service. We hoped to provide an experience that would allow each Cadet to expand their knowledge, engage with other liked minded individuals, understand teamwork and leadership as well as achieve personal growth and competence. As a result, we believed the 2019 NHFETA could draw young adults interested in Fire/EMS and provide them with the tools necessary to motivate them, encourage their ambitions in Fire/EMS and allow them to become successful Firefighters and EMS Providers.

As always, the NHFETA Planning Committee and Staff remain committed and dedicated to the NHFETA mission. We look forward to the 2020 NHFETA and will continue to improve all aspects of the Academy. As we move forward, we are cognizant of the decreased numbers of young adults applying for the program. We will make the necessary changes to encourage more young people to apply to NHFETA and consider accommodations needed for a smaller group. Throughout the year, we will continue to encourage young adults to seek out and become involved in their local Fire Department, EMS agencies, Exploring Post, high school programs and other programs that offer any Fire/EMS experiences for them.

Each year the NHFETA has been conducted in coordination with Daniel Webster Council, BSA, and the NH Fire Academy. NHFETA would not be possible without the extremely generous support of the NH Fire Academy, Director Pendergast and the NHFA Staff, as well as the all-volunteer NHFETA Staff members, Instructors, Alumni and Planning Committee. We are extremely grateful for all the people, organizations, associations and donors who support NHFETA every year. We look forward to your continued support in 2020!
