In recent months, data centers have been all over the news.

At our First Friday at Cape Cod Community College last week, RENEW Northeast Manager of State and Local Affairs Nathan Raike briefly touched upon how Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey’s Executive Order, signed into law last month, gives local communities a bigger voice and offers more protections when it comes to permitting data centers moving forward.

When Kevin is not busy strengthening our work, he's using his talents and expertise to provide audio, event management, lighting, and video services through his company, East West Event Services.

We ended last week with a fascinating look at how the region's energy grid works, and how electrons make their way, in the form of electricity, into our homes and businesses.

A big thanks to RENEW Northeast Manager of State & Local Affairs Nathan Raike for leading the informative talk and sharing why the cost of electricity has gone up in recent years, and how improving the transmission of electricity can lower costs and enhance reliability.

He also highlighted the increased diversity of our energy system, "which was overwhelmingly fossil based," to one that has adopted more renewables.

As more investment is made in improving transmission infrastructure and adding renewables, Nathan said, "you can cut both your emissions, but also the price of your electricity bills in the long run. We're talking over a 10- to 20-year time horizon."

We were excited to see Miles O’Brien on the main stage at HubSpot’s UNBOUND conference yesterday in Boston. He was interviewing NASA astronaut Sunita Williams about handling adversity and navigating challenges in light of spending nearly nine months in space last year in what was supposed to be a week-long mission.

Both Sunita and Miles have ties to the Cape, and Miles spoke at our Annual Meeting last year.

Did you know that 130 million tons of plastic pollutes our environment each year? It's estimated that this figure will rise to 280 million tons by 2040.

It's a problem that impacts our shorelines and waters with 70-80% of ocean plastic pollution starting on land.

On Friday, we learned about the magnitude of the problem from WHOI Sea Grant Sr. Communications Specialist Stephanie Murphy. Perhaps most importantly, we all learned that each of us can do something about that problem, from minimizing our use of single-use plastics to recycling plastic (including boat shrink wrap) to using reusable products as much as possible.

It was not only a fascinating talk, but one that shows the important role all of us have in protecting and preserving this special place we call home.

This summer, WHOI Sea Grant fellows learned about the harmful impacts of plastics to our oceans and shoreline.

Tomorrow morning at Cape Cod Community College, we're excited to not only learn about the magnitude of the problem, but what WHOI Sea Grant is doing to address it in our local waters and coastline. We'll also find out how we can all be a part of the solution.
