Cold weather does not always mean productive pepper plants must be pulled up and discarded. 🌶️

With the right approach, favorite varieties may survive the winter and return for another growing season. Gardeners can choose between different indoor strategies, and each one requires its own type of care.

If saying goodbye to a healthy pepper feels wasteful, discover how overwintering could give it a valuable head start next spring.

🕷️ THAT “MOST VENOMOUS SPIDER” STORY? IT’S COMPLETELY WRONG.

That long-legged creature wandering across your garden isn’t a deadly spider hiding a secret weapon.

It’s a harvestman, and it doesn’t have fangs or venom glands like spiders do.

Instead, it quietly goes about its business—feeding on decaying plant material and small insects, including some garden pests. 🌿

And no, it doesn’t spin those classic spider webs either.

So the next time you spot a daddy longlegs in your garden, don’t panic.

You may actually be looking at one of the quiet little helpers working in your backyard. ❤️

The swallow swooping under your eave this summer spent the winter in South America — and crossed the entire hemisphere to come back to this exact building.

Barn swallows are among the great travelers of the bird world. The same individual that nested over your door last year flies thousands of miles to Argentina and back, then returns not just to your area but to the same eave, often with the same mate.

🌾 They're built for a life spent almost entirely in the air. A barn swallow feeds on the wing, snapping up flies, mosquitoes, and winged ants inches above the grass at full speed, and even drinks mid-flight, skimming its bill across a pond without ever landing.

The deeply forked tail is the signature — and it's more than style. Females favor males with the longest, most symmetrical tail streamers, so that fork is a kind of résumé, advertising a strong, well-traveled mate. No other swallow on the continent wears one quite like it.

🪺 What it asks of the building it adopts is small: a beam or a ledge tucked under the eave to anchor a nest, and a patch of bare mud near a puddle to build with. In return you get a resident family working the insects off your yard from dawn to dusk, all summer long — then gone again, back across the world, by fall.
