Knox County Public Schools A Preschool - 12th grade school district in southeastern Kentucky. On our way to being a Top 10% school district in the state.

Our commitment to over 4,500 children spans twelve campuses. We have seven elementary schools with grades K-6, two middle schools with grades 7-8, two high schools with 9-12 enrollment, and two alternative education schools – Knox Appalachian School and the Learning Academy.

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of former coach Mitchell Madden.

Madden was Knox Central boys’ basketball coach for two seasons. He compiled a 43-18 record during his tenure. He led Knox Central to a 51st District championship in 2024 and to the 13th Region Tournament in both seasons.

Please keep Coach Madden's family, former players, colleagues, and all who knew him in your thoughts and prayers.

Welcome to school, preschoolers!

On Thursday and Friday, our youngest learners met their teachers, explored their classrooms, and learned about schoolwide PBIS expectations.

On Monday, everyone came together for their first full day of school!

Knox County Public Schools has 11 preschool classes across seven schools, serving 213 students.

Preschool helps children build a strong foundation for learning. Through social-emotional learning, students learn to understand themselves, interact positively with others, manage their emotions and behavior, and become more independent.

We are excited to watch our youngest learners believe, achieve, and succeed!

A Message from Superintendent Ledford for Knox Central High School Families.

We want to make you aware of a situation involving a Knox Central High School student who made an online post implying a threat. The school was alerted to the post. Although it was unclear whether the threat was directed at the school or a specific individual or group outside the school, additional safety measures were put into place out of an abundance of caution.

We worked closely with law enforcement to identify the source of the post and the student involved. School Resource Officers and members of the Knox County Sheriff’s Department were on campus while the matter was investigated.

Please know that we take our students' safety and well-being seriously, both inside and outside the classroom. We appreciate students, parents, and staff members who bring concerning information to our attention. Making a threat can result in serious disciplinary and legal consequences. Local law enforcement has pledged to always pursue appropriate action.

We encourage families to use this situation as an opportunity to talk with students about responsible use of sharing digital images and messaging. Digital communication can be valuable, but what students post, view, or share with others can be harmful and have far-reaching consequences.
