We’re on our way to reaching our goal of planting 100K trees in Marquette– and there’s still time for you to help us reach our goal! 🌲

Among the many projects of our GLCC and GLTCC teams, our crews have been busy planting native trees across Marquette County to help enhance coastal habitats near Lake Superior and our local ecosystems. We’re making great progress toward the 100,000 mark, and you can help us get there!

Whether you’re a local municipality, organization or landowner, you can request trees at no cost to you (plant your own trees or the GLCC can help you plant trees for orders over 100).

Some more pictures from our activities this summer. The wildfire smoke and storms were not always in our favor, but we made the most of it!

Our planned Geoheritage field days were cancelled due to smoke, but Erika and Daniel of the Great Lakes Research Center were gracious enough to give us a tour of the A. E. Seaman Mineral Museum, where we learned about the rocks and minerals of the UP and how they connect us.

We also toured the Quincy Mine in Hancock, further exploring the cultural connections we have to minerals and mining. Thank you to the staff of Quincy Mine for organizing our awesome tour! And thank you to Erika and Dan for their hard work bringing Geoheritage programming to our youth!

A recap on the fun and eventful week we had!

Tuesday: worked with the NRD youth at the DIGS community garden. We weeded the blackberry and blueberry patches and helped till and plant the bed of asemaa, which will be used by the NRD for ceremonies and gifts.

Wednesday: both crews went to Michigan Tech for a college tour, where we got to walk the campus and learn what it would be like to be a student there.

Thursday: we took an Inland Seas boat tour out of the Great Lakes Research Center! We sailed the Portage, learned about the Great Lakes, and participated in hands-on research and sailing! It was a beautiful day and an awesome opportunity.

Yesterday was our first day with the full crew for the 2026 YCC season! The thunderstorms diverted our beach clean-up plans, but we still made the most of it!

The YCC crew, along with the NRD Youth workers, assisted the NRD by harvesting cedar and braiding lots of sweetgrass! We also received a tour of the hatchery and a presentation on local wildlife.

Thanks to all the NRD workers who showed us around and gave us a glimpse into the good work they do!
