Recently our Brothers and Sisters across the Diocese of Madison have been SCAMMED! Please be sure to check the official sender of all emails especially if the email is asking for money, gift cards ect… to be sent. Baraboo Catholic will not solicit funds this way.

Here is what we received today describing the scam:

A nefarious character creates a fake gmail account with the name of the pastor in which a request is made from that email account to parish staff members or parishioners for I-tune cards & money. Although once this scam is discovered the key parishioners and staff members are alerted, in one case a parishioner went out and bought $200 worth of I-tune cards in response to the request. Unfortunately, there’s nothing that can be done to prevent this sort of thing. It is very easy to create a fake email account (gmail account, yahoo account, etc…) and impersonate someone. Anyone can do this.
