Horrifying.

This photograph taken in the 1890s captures a Chinese woman who had her feet bound since childhood. Footbinding was a traditional Chinese practice involving the breaking and tight binding of young girls' feet to alter their shape and size. The resulting modified feet were referred to as "lotus feet," while the shoes designed for these feet were called "lotus shoes." In ancient China, having bound feet was regarded as a symbol of social status and feminine beauty. However, footbinding inflicted great pain, restricted women's mobility, and led to lifelong disabilities. It was not until the early 20th century that the practice began to decline due to anti-footbinding campaigns. Wealthier urban women abandoned footbinding earlier than their less privileged counterparts in rural areas. As of 2007, only a few elderly Chinese women who had experienced footbinding were still alive.

Fruit Salad
Ingredients
1 can(s)pineapple chunks, in their own juice
1 can(s)mandarin oranges, drained
1 bunchgreen grapes, halved
2bananas
1 pkgstrawberries, sliced however you want
1 boxsmall box of vanilla instant pudding (jell-o brand only – others just don’t taste right)
1you can also add other fruits that you like to this as you please.
Directions
Pour the pineapple, juice and all into a bowl. Add the pudding mix and stir until creamy. Stir in the DRAINED mandarin oranges. Add additional fruit and stir in completely until covered and creamy.
Refrigerate the salad for a while until it is nice and chilled. Don’t let it sit to long or the banana’s will turn brown. You can also serve right after making this without chilling. Personally, it is much better chilled.

I realize this is not a Class of '58 topic, but I am looking for information for a program I am giving.

At the Belfast Historical Society on Monday, August 29th at 7 p.m., I am presenting a PowerPoint program on the Boston Boats, which were called the City of Bangor, the City of Belfast, the City of Camden, the City of Rockland. These four steamships left from Bangor AND Boston every twelve hours, and the service ended in the mid-1930s. I produced a PP for the Orrington Historical Society that lasted a half-hour, but this new program will be one-hour long.

I am seeking additional material such as a grandparent’s journal, a souvenir, an anecdote, a postcard, a timetable, cargo reference, a family photo, WWII involvement, a newspaper article. I don’t have access to the online newspaper records, but if you have time to research, would you send me some articles? The Gmail address is [email protected] and please write Boston Boat in the Subject line. I am willing to drive to photograph an artifact.

The posted newspaper article with the aqua arrow points to a mention of the Robinson family leaving Bucksport on a Boston Boat, an example of what I will use. I have an anecdote of a man’s mother being seven months pregnant on a Boston Boat. A friend told me of hearing the horn blast of the last Boston Boat to travel down the Penobscot River. What might you have?
