Curious to Try Bikerafting?

Want to learn more about the Katahdin Woods and water National Monument?

Excited to support the work of Friends of Katahdin 🌲🌲🌲 & 💧💧💧 ?

Sign up and join us this Saturday June 27th! Alejandro Strong is joining up with staff from Friends of Katahdin Woods and Waters for a multimodal adventure on the East Branch of the Penobscot and some of the roads in the monument. This is a beginner friendly trip. We will stick together and keep a mellow pace while biking. Don’t worry we will take time to learn how to load boats onto bikes, some tricks for riding with a loaded bike, and how to set up the boats and load the bikes on.

NEW PROGRAM ALERT! This is NREC Moosehead's first foray into an overnight adventure program for local rural Piscataquis County High School students! Brainchild of our new Educator, Sarah Hubert; hiking, whitewater rafting with Northeast Whitewater, canoeing on Moosehead, camping, and packraft with packraftmaine!

By navigating the woods and water trails of the Moosehead Lake Region, participants develop resilience, teamwork, and self-reliance. A trip of a lifetime that these teens will always remember.

A comparable camp would normally be close to a grand but through volunteer grant writing by the board and members like YOU, we are offering this camp for only $200 for NREC members and $250 for nonmembers. Scholarships available, email [email protected] with questions.

Last minute change for this weekend!!

We are changing up our workshop and doing an overnight Bikerafting trip in the Bangor area. The trip is $125 per person and we need at least 3 people to run the trip. Get yourself and your bike to the Concord Coach bust station in Bangor, and we will help with the rest.

Come along on a lunch to lunch overnight trip! Starting and Ending at the Concord Coach bus station in Bangor, this trip will include a mix of biking on road and local trails as we make our way up to the Penobscot River in Orono, from their we will paddle down river, camping at a Penobscot River Paddling Trail Campsite Saturday night and then continuing down the Penobscot to Bangor and finally biking back to the bus station. Meet at Concord Coach Bus Station 2:30
Bike 17 miles to Penobscot River, including trail riding in Walden Parke, Bangor City Forest, and Caribou Bog.
Paddle 3 miles on Penobscot River, including Class I and II rapids.

Paddle 1 miles on Penobscot River
Camp at Penobscot RIver Paddling Trail Campsite Saturday night

Breakfast at Camp
Paddle 7 miles on Penobscot River including Class I and II rapids

Join us for a powerful and joyful day on the water, led by Alejandro Strong, owner of Packraft Maine, and Saige Purser, an experienced Indigenous river guide and educator, and Skowhegan Outdoors. This event is designed to create a welcoming space for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color, LGBTQIA Folks, as well as their allies, to connect with rivers, build confidence in whitewater paddling, and reclaim our relationships with land and water through adventure, community, and care. We anre organizing a Community Paddle, an Introduction to Whitewater, and a Paddler Meetup

Community Paddle is an unguided group paddle for intermediate and experienced boaters. This is a chance to meet other paddlers and enjoy a beautiful Class II stretch of the Penobscot from Orono to Veazie.
Introduction to Whitewater is for people looking to try whitewater for the first time, or improve their confidence on the water. We have a group of instructors and safety boaters excited to get people on the water!
Paddler Meetup meet up with other paddlers after paddling to share stories and plan your next paddling trip!
This is a free event to get more people on the water. Don’t have your own gear? No worries, we have boats and paddling gear for people!

3 events to get on your calendar for the summer!

Midge and Hammy packrafting last summer.

It is the day after the solstice and the days are starting to get longer. In these lengthening days at the end of the year, I hope you all have a chance to slow down with people that matter to you. If you have looked through our blog or signed up for our email list you know that I’m not great about regular update. The last of these year in review posts I did was in 2022. Oops! The truth is I am excited to get this out there. Lots of good stuff happened this year and we have some new things planned for next year. Read the rest on our blog, link in Bio!

ACA Level 4 whitewater rescue workshop, focused on giving you the knowledge and skills to respond to serious moving water emergencies.

Bikerafting Workshop 5/30
An introduction to bike and packraft travel, A short multimodal loop covering the basics of carrying boats and paddling gear on your bike, loading bikes onto packrafts, and tips for planning bikerafting adventures.

Whitewater Packrafting 5/31
For beginner and intermediate paddlers, covering basic whitewater paddling maneuvers, scouting rapids, whitewater hazards and safety, and packraft specific techniques.

River Running Workshop 6/6-7
Combining whitewater rescue and paddling, 2 days of paddling and lessons focusing on giving you the skills and confidence to lead others on rapids.
