πŸš’ Fire safety came to life at MSB’s Early Learning Center!
Our youngest learners met the Baltimore City Fire Department, explored a real fire truck, and discovered how firefighters keep us safe through every sense. 🦯

[Video description: A Baltimore City Fire Department fire truck is parked outside The Maryland School for the Blind’s Early Learning Center. Early learners, ages 3–6, venture outdoors to meet the firefighters and ask questions. Some students try on fire safety helmets. They explore the truck up close β€” feeling the textures, discovering hidden compartments, and, one by one, sitting inside on both ends of the vehicle. It’s a new and exciting experience for our little learners, reaching new heights and learning through every sense.]

🦯 October 15th is White Cane Safety Day, here at MSB we want to acknowledge the role Dr. Hoover had in developing the modern and popular technique for White Cane travel.

October 15 is White Cane Safety Day 🦯

For someone who is blind or has low vision, the decision to use a white cane is deeply personal. It is not about ability or limitation. It is about confidence, safety, and freedom of movement. πŸ‘¨πŸ»β€πŸ¦―

When Orientation & Mobility (O&M) specialists explore whether a cane might be the right fit, they often start with questions like:

1. Do you notice uncertainty when walking over curbs or uneven ground?
2. Do you often rely on others for guidance in new places?
3. Are you more confident traveling in familiar or well-lit areas?
4. How do you detect stairs, drop-offs, or obstacles around you?
5. What tools help you feel safest and most independent when moving?

There is no single answer and no single path to independence. A white cane is just one of many tools that can expand confidence, awareness, and autonomy. πŸ‘©πŸΎβ€πŸ¦―

If you are curious about learning or trying one, talk with a Certified Orientation & Mobility Specialist (COMS).

Students and families can also connect with The Maryland School for the Blind’s O&M team or their local state blindness and low vision services to explore options.

Independence starts with information.

At the Maryland School for the Blind, we know sight is only part of the story. Everyone deserves the chance to see beyond barriers and reach their full potential.
