The University of Maryland School of Pharmacy, founded in 1841, is the fourth oldest school of pharmacy in the nation. The School is one of seven professional schools and a graduate school located at the University of Maryland, a thriving center for life sciences research and community service. Through its education, research, and service programs, the School of Pharmacy strives to improve the health and well-being of society by aiding in the discovery, development, and use of medicines. The School of Pharmacy is comprised of three departments, Pharmacy Practice and Science, Pharmaceutical Sciences, and Pharmaceutical Health Services Research. The Department of Pharmacy Practice and Science promotes the health and well being of the public by advancing the practice of pharmacy and generating and disseminating new knowledge related to pharmacy practice and drug use. The Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences conducts state-of-the-art research and discovery in the areas of cellular and chemical biology, neuroscience, pharmacology, biopharmaceutics and drug delivery. The Pharmaceutical Health Services Research Department provides teaching, service, and scholarly activities related the behavioral sciences, pharmacoeconomics, pharmacoepidemiology, and regulatory issues. In addition to cutting edge research in drug delivery mechanisms, cost impact studies, basic drug discovery and development, and disease management, the School engages in a wide variety of professional practice activities, partnering with over 200 community pharmacies, hospitals, nursing homes, and other agencies to provide services to citizens and practitioners around the State and across the nation.

What does it take to become a health care leader who can create meaningful change?
A new program being developed by Chanel F. Whittaker, PharmD, BCGP, FASCP, CPDC, professor of practice, sciences, and health outcomes research and associate dean for institutional excellence and engagement, is designed to help future health professionals answer that question.

The Health Equity and Leadership (HEAL) Fellowship will give PharmD students opportunities to develop skills in equity-minded leadership, shared leadership, systems thinking, organizational change, and community engagement.

Students will put those skills into practice through team-based simulations, leadership experiences, community learning, and opportunities to better understand the social and structural factors that influence health outcomes.

Whittaker was selected as one of three faculty members across the University System of Maryland to receive a 2026 Wilson H. Elkins Traditional Professorship.
The $40,000 award will support development and piloting of the HEAL Fellowship.

The goal? Help prepare future health care leaders who can move beyond identifying problems to working collaboratively with communities to create change.

What happens when classroom knowledge meets real-world pharmacy practice?
That’s where experiential learning comes in.

Today, more than 30% of the UMSOP PharmD curriculum is dedicated to experiential education, giving student pharmacists opportunities to develop clinical skills, professional confidence, and a deeper understanding of patient care alongside practicing pharmacists.

Cynthia J. Boyle, PharmD ’96, FAPhA, FNAP, FASCP, has spent decades helping shape that experience. After joining UMSOP’s faculty in 1999, she helped advance preceptor education and founded the Academy of Preceptors in 2004 to recognize excellence and strengthen teaching skills among clinical faculty.

Now retired, Dr. Boyle continues to invest in the future of experiential learning through an endowment supporting the Experiential Learning Program and Academy of Preceptors.

Her support helps provide professional development, recognition, and opportunities that strengthen the experiences students receive throughout their PharmD journey.

Janet Edwards, BSP, MS ’21, has always been curious about what comes next.

During pharmacy school, she explored opportunities across the pharmaceutical industry and quickly discovered that she loved the people, flexibility, and possibilities that came with a career in pharma. That curiosity eventually led to a 28-year career at GSK and, years later, to UMSOP to pursue her interest in regulatory science.

As an alumnus of our MS in Regulatory Science program, Janet brings together health, business, science, and regulatory knowledge in her work, while also mentoring students and staying connected to the pharmacy community through alumni leadership.

Her advice to students is simple: “Observe. Ask questions. Be open to new opportunities.”
