I look forward to seeing her grow as a reader this summer.

Last Saturday, 5 scholars joined me for Book Chat and we talked about stepping out of our reading comfort zone. We talked about reading a book in another genre that we really wouldn't gravitate towards. We challenged ourselves to read a book from a different genre.

So....I was challenged by the group to read a graphic novel AND a Sci-Fi book.

We also made goals for the summer. One scholar's goal is to read 10 books this summer. ๐Ÿ˜ณ She is very ambitious and I know she will attain that goal. My goal is to read 5 books.

We have such rich conversations during Book Chats. I'm looking forward to our next meeting on July 1st, 2023.

If you would like your scholar to join in on the conversation, use the link in my bio to register.

On June 26th, 2023 I will be kicking off the first Book club of the summer!! ๐Ÿฅณ

We will be starting with Ghost Boys by Jewel Parker Rhodes. This story is told by Jerome, a 12 year-old bullied black kid in Chicago who is shot dead by a while policeman while playing with a toy gun. Both his own family and the cop's start to unravel in the wake of this horror as Jerome watched through grieving, anger, court appearances-- and his friend stepping up to defend his little sister from bullies. Along the way, he forms a shaky friendship with the cop's daughter, Sarah (the only living person whi can see him), and learns from Ghost Emmett Till of a long and brutal history of black kids being killed. In a story where there are no winner, the only thing to do is try to do better.

Writing is an important element in scholars' education, whether writing by hand or on the computer. Writing is used to assess what they have learned. As they move up in grade levels, they are expected to show more sophisticated writing skills and to complete more sophisticated tasks through writing.

This summer I will be offering a fiction writing course for scholars in grades 3-5 to strengthen and hone in on their writing skills. During the 4 weeks, we will study the works of picture book masters to create works of fiction of their own.

Let's keep the writing going over the summer.
