Montebello Elementary/ Middle School

This past week was Teacher Appreciation Week, and our Assistant Principals made the last Spirit Airlines flight memorable for our staff.

I would say Montebello Day was a success.

Members of the Montebello Community were invited to St Francis Academy to participate in a basketball camp and community outreach program sponsored by the Washington Wizards. Members of the Montebello Dolphin Basketball team had a chance to meet with professional basketball players and discuss topics from sports to academics. From all accounts it was a great time for our students as well as the players. We are fortunate to have so many community partners that can provide these kinds of unique experiences for our students.

This past weekend, Montebello students participating in the Alpha Strong Foundations mentoring program engaged in a powerful learning experience focused on financial literacy and the importance of strong academic preparation for high school and college.

Following this session, students visited a gaming lab in the city where programmers showcased games they had designed. Our students had the opportunity to play games created by peers their age and observe competitions featuring local college e-sports teams.

Students were able to interact with designers and players from Morgan State University, Bowie State University, Coppin State University, and Howard University. These interactions provided valuable insight into both the creative and technical aspects of game design and competitive gaming.

We are currently in the process of forming a partnership to bring e-sports programming to Montebello. Exposure to experiences like this opens up a new world of opportunities for our students. Many are already passionate about gaming, and this experience helps them see how they can transform that interest into future careers in design, programming, and technology.

Both the Alumni and College Brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. continue to support our students through their monthly “Lunch Bunch” mentoring visits. During their most recent visit on Thursday, January 15th, the Brothers engaged our young men in meaningful conversation, provided snacks, and strengthened relationships through games and fellowship.

A special shout-out to Ethan Norris, who demonstrated both focus and confidence by winning a game of chess against one of the College Brothers.

These moments are more than just activities; they are experiences that inspire leadership, build character, and leave a lifelong impact on our students.

In addition, on Saturday, January 17th, students participated in the Brothers’ monthly mentoring initiative, Strong Foundations. This month’s focus emphasized the importance of confidence and competence in developing strong character and leadership habits.

Members of the Montebello class of 1962 attended our 8th Grade closing today. They reminded me that they began at Montebello in 1955, 70 years ago. The Montebello legacy is long and continues. They also made a sizable donation to the school on behalf of their class. They are forever Dolphins!
