An announcement from the director of LGBTQ Life:
If you haven’t already heard, I wanted to share that I will be leaving LGBTQ Life for another opportunity within Hopkins. Beginning September 17, I will take on a new role as the Executive Director of Inclusion, Excellence, Education, and Development, working within the Office of Diversity and Inclusion. In this new position, I will be responsible for designing and delivering diversity education and professional development for JHU’s faculty, staff, and students. Although it’s hard to leave LGBTQ Life, I am excited about building on the relationships I have with you all in order to improve JHU’s approach to diversity education.
I have truly enjoyed the past eight years of making LGBTQ Life a reality. I am so grateful to everyone who attended Safe Zone trainings, volunteered their time as facilitators, led meetups, mentored peers, showed their love with a rainbow ribbon, marched in the Pride Parade, and supported the community. We have created gender-inclusive housing, created all-gender restrooms, and added chosen name and pronoun fields to computer systems. I’ve been privileged to work with phenomenal student leaders who served as interns, graduate assistants, and student organization representatives. I feel very lucky to be a part of this community.
A search to fill my role will begin soon. In the interim, Jun Tarashi will be serving as the graduate assistant for LGBTQ Life and will be hosting opportunities for community engagement. Some larger programs, such as Safe Zone training, will be put on hold until a full-time hire is made. We thank you in advance for your patience and support. You can also connect with the Associate Dean for Diversity and Inclusion, Charles Lu ([email protected]).
I’ll continue to be available at [email protected], so please reach out if there is anything I can do for you.
With pride,
Demere Woolway

Violence against trans people has increased in recent years. In 2020, more trans people were victims of hate crimes than at any other time. So far this year, nationally, more than 30 trans people have been victims of homicide.
