Arts & Ideas Sudbury School Putting Baltimore K-12 students in control of their own lives and their own school since 2008.

Arts & Ideas Sudbury School is modeled after Sudbury Valley School, the first school of its kind, founded in 1968. At A&I, students and staff run the school together through a democratic structure in which every staff and student has one vote in every decision made by the School Meeting. With no curriculum, no required academics, no testing and a daily schedule left up to each student to decide fo

r themselves, students at A&I are free to learn, explore, and reflect at their own pace in a way that works best for them.

Clubs, corporations and clerkships are some of the ways we make stuff happen! Clerks are elected officials voted on by all School Meeting Members. Clerkships include the School Meeting Clerk who runs School Meeting (see “What is SM?”) and JC Clerk who facilitates Judicial Committee (see “what is JC?”) Clubs are groups of people with a shared interest. Corporations are a club with a budget (through School Meeting approval) and a way to make decisions about that budget.

School Meeting is how we run the school democratically! Every week we meet to discuss rules (should Snickers be banned?!) , budget requests (can Art Corporation have $60 for paint?), visitor approvals (come say hi!), elections (who wants to be the Chicken Clerk?) and difficult Judicial Committee cases (next weeks zine will be What is JC?). Every student and staff has one vote and the meeting is run by the School Meetjng Clerk who is often a student.
