Had an amazing time at today’s UMBC Applied Sociology MA reunion!
It’s incredible how much life has happened since our days together in the program. Some of us are engaged, some have welcomed kids, some are diving into (or finishing up!) PhD journeys, others are navigating layoffs, and many are bravely exploring new career paths. But no matter how different our stories have become, today felt like picking up right where we left off 😊
I’m so thankful for the friendships we built through the program and for the kindness, laughter, and honesty we shared today. It’s a gift to be part of a community where people genuinely care, root for each other’s successes, and show up to reconnect despite busy lives.
I'm already looking forward to the next reunion, and I hope even more of our classmates, department staff, and faculty will be able to join us. Grateful for every single one of you. 🥰

Civic Learning and Democratic Engagement (CLDE) conference is organized by American Democracy Project (ADP) and NASPA to bring together faculty, student affairs professionals, senior campus administrators, students, and community partners. The theme for the 2021 virtual conference is “Defining the Path Forward.” On June 4th at 1.30 pm, Fariha Khalid, Samantha Fries, Faith Davis, and Erin Kosloski from UMBC will be presenting in a Civic Cafe Session at CLDE, “Improving Basic Needs Access on College Campus.” They will discuss the findings of a mixed-methods community-based research on food and basic needs insecurity among UMBC students, faculty, and staff. Additionally, they will highlight the role of Retriever Essentials in supporting vulnerable populations of our campus community. By the end of the session, participants are expected to understand the phenomenon of basic needs insecurity, share best practices to address the problem, and exchange knowledge/skills to form an ongoing network of resources.
