Academia: Pharmacists play a variety of roles in academia: as administrators (e.g., provosts, deans, dept chairs, associate deans, etc.), educators, clinical practitioners, and researchers. Often a faculty member plays more than one role, depending on their track (e.g., non-tenure track faculty primarily provide patient care and hands-on teaching to APPE students, whereas tenure-track faculty primarily conduct research and teach classes) and department (e.g., faculty in pharmaceutical sciences teach basic science courses and conduct bench research, whereas faculty in pharmacy practice department teach therapeutics courses and conduct clinical or health outcomes research).

Psychiatric clinical pharmacists are pivotal in the care of patients with substance use disorders to advocate for and initiate medications for alcohol use disorder (MAUD) and opioid use disorder (MOUD). Pharmacists are uniquely positioned to counsel patients on MAUD/MOUD, provide naloxone (Narcan) on discharge, and further facilitate transitions of care by ensuring affordability of these medications and confirming continuity via outpatient follow up.
