As the time for Marylanders to cast their early votes next month nears, Election Day is just around the corner. Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks and Rep. David Trone (D-6th) are the most prominent names in a field of 10 candidates facing off for the Democratic nomination for the Maryland U.S. Senate seat, replacing Ben Cardin.

The primary election will take place on May 14, though early voting begins Thursday and runs through May 9. The Democratic nominees will face the Republican nominee on Nov. 5 in the general election. Political activist Robin Ficker and former Maryland Governor Larry Hogan are the best known of seven Republican candidates.

Trone is best known for serving as a congressman in Maryland’s 6th district. Before becoming a politician, Trone worked primarily as a businessman. In 1991, Trone co-founded popular wine and spirit retailer Total Wine & More with his brother Robert Trone.

Trone and his campaign team visited Morgan State University Thursday. There, he met with university officials, including President David Wilson. He agreed to sit down with The Spokesman to discuss the current state of the campaign.

The Morgan State University men’s basketball team won four out of their last five Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) games and are on a two-game win streak.

In the beginning of the season, Bears head coach Kevin Broadus said that the team’s chemistry had to get better, which was one of the reasons they struggled early on.

“The chemistry has definitely gone up, normally the team’s chemistry only goes up when we’re winning, but even before conference play started and we were struggling, I could feel the chemistry coming together,” junior guard Kamron Hobbs said. “Now it’s really showing in these past couple games. Being able to bond together even while losing makes it easier and more fun to bond together once you find a way to win.”

Thurgood Marshall Hall, the campus’ newest dorm, has been interrupted throughout the week, Morgan State President David Wilson has offered students a chance to shower at other dorms or relocation to students at a downtown hotel.

The university will allow students residing in the dorm  — which opened in Fall 2022 — to shower at Blount Towers, Rawlings Hall and O’Connell Hall by schedule, Wilson said in a statement to the campus. He added the university is looking to bring in a temporary detached facility to be placed near Marshall Hall.

Wilson added students could also move to the Lord Baltimore Hotel with Morgan’s assistance “if they are interested in a more permanent off-campus accommodation.”

Twenty six members of Morgan State University’s choir will perform the national anthem before the game between the Baltimore Ravens and the Kansas City Chiefs Sunday.

The game between Baltimore and Kansas City is the American Football Conference (AFC) championship and its winner will move on to compete in Super Bowl 58, which is scheduled on Feb. 11.

A team representative reached out to Morgan’s choir and requested they perform should the Ravens defeat the Houston Texans — which they did 34-10.

Morgan State University’s women’s basketball team has added nine new players to the team to prepare for their upcoming season, which began yesterday evening.

The new recruits bring a diverse set of skills and experiences that can help reshape the team’s dynamic.

Associate Head Coach and Recruiting Coordinator Donchez Graham said many of their older members have graduated and they needed to bring in new players to fit the powerhouse team they aim to build.

“We wanted tough-minded players who are aggressive, highly coachable and are highly motivated players,” said Graham. “We wanted players who were ready to take the opportunity to take their skill levels and performances to the next level.”

Morgan State University is hosting an Italian art exhibition organized by the Black History Month Florence Association called “The Recovery Plan: Alle porte coi sassi.”
The Recovery Plan exhibition came from Venice, Italy and made its breakthrough appearance in the United States at Morgan’s James E. Lewis Museum of Arts (JELMA) and the Martin D. Jenkins Behavioral and Social Sciences Center. The exhibition is free and open to the public until Mar. 31.
Morgan State is the only HBCU in the country that offers an Italian program, hence the university’s selection as the home of The Recovery Plan. The exhibition is fully funded by the Italian government via the Italian Culture Institute in Washington D.C.

Morgan State’s men’s basketball team (15-15, 7-7 MEAC) ended their regular season with a 77 – 65 loss to the Coppin State Eagles (9-22, 4-10 MEAC) in the final home game of the 2022-23 season.
The Bears entered the game against Coppin on a three-game winning streak and looked to carry that momentum into the game against their cross town rivals. This was the final regular season game for the Bears as they prepare for the MEAC tournament, March 8-11.
The night was full of emotion as moments prior the women’s team pulled off a close win over the Lady Eagles, and the Senior Night activities were in full display.
The Bears had five seniors playing their final game at Hill Field House; forward Collin Nnamene, center Ty Horner, forward Lewis Djonkam, guard Isaiah Burke and guard Malik Miller.
All of them made the starting lineup outside of the injured guard Miller. The Bears could have used his 17.5 points per game on 50 percent shooting as they fell behind early to Coppin.

The Creed movie series made a return to theaters on Friday, introducing new characters and anime inspired fight moves in the third movie.
Before the movie was released, cast members hosted a press conference for the upcoming movie with HBCU student journalists at the Four Seasons Hotel Midtown in Atlanta, Ga. and on Zoom.
Michael B. Jordan, actor and director of Creed III, never thought he would be talking to individuals at a press conference for a movie he directed, until now.
“Directing and [being] a part of a major franchise such as Creed, I’m always gonna dream. You know, I didn’t know what I was gonna be manifesting,” Jordan said.
In the film, Jordan’s character, Adonis, had to face new problems and revisit memories from his past when his childhood friend appeared.
Phylicia Rashad, Tessa Thompson, Jonathan Majors, and Florian Munteanu are just a few actors who starred in this new movie alongside Jordan.

In its 84 years gracing Morgan State University’s campus, the university chapter of the National Association for the Advancement for Colored People (NAACP) has been a notable force in school culture.
On Feb. 28, Morgan State’s NAACP chapter and several other local chapters took to the Supreme Court to voice their concerns on student debt cancellation, an ongoing issue that has riddled our nation for decades.
“It was certainly impactful for [The NAACP] to be a part of something that affects us Morgan and other HBCU students mentally and physically,” Serena Chapelle, senior multimedia major and NAACP event director, said.
Government officials like Bernie Sanders and Congressman Maxwell Frost rallied alongside the group of protesters on Tuesday.
