Student: Ms. Alter, you drunk?
Me: What? No!
Student: But you have big muscles!
Me: Oh! You said strong!

New day! New intervention! I am
now teaching the SIPPS (systematic instruction in phonological awareness, phonics and sight words). Like all interventions I use, this intervention is evidence based and uses an explicit, systematic routine to decoding, syllables, sight words, and reading fluency. It is great for my more advanced students!

I have crazy news! One of my first clients is getting married next week! Not only that, she was accepted into Harvard law school (I totally had something to do with that!) Her family reached out to me to tell me the great news. When we tutor your children, it’s not just teaching. We become a team to help the student achieve to the best of their abilities. Families reach out to me all the time with good news about how their children are doing. It is such a privilege to be a part of this process.

Sooooooo…my client was having some trouble understanding fractions. Fractions are a foundational part of early learning. I asked his mom to bring over some uncut pizzas so we could understand how different fractions presented themselves in real life. He cut the pizza in half. We connected that to the fraction one half with a numerator and denominator. Then we cut one fourth of the pizza and wrote the corresponding fraction. We cut all kinds of stuff! To make sure he understood we connected the concrete to the abstract by coloring in shapes and writing the correct fraction next to it! The kiddo is zooming and learning so much thanks to tutoring and an awesome teacher.

Hi friends! As many of you know, I am passionate about education. I’m a special educator with Baltimore County public schools and have run my own tutoring business, Alter Tutoring, for nearly 14 years. I am certified and special education for grades one through eight, early childhood for age 3 through grade 3. I am trained in Orton Gillingham, Wilson Reading, Visualizing and Verbalizing, and LETRS. My agency also includes tutoring to specialize in a wide range of academic areas for grades K-12.

Today's lesson focused on the "magic e," which we learned by pairing the long vowel with the "magic e's" influence. I used Nerds, but glitter, sprinkles or other fun materials could also be used.
