Patterson HS PLTW / Academy of Engineering

Patterson HS PLTW / Academy of Engineering Patterson's Project Lead the Way engineering program consists of hands-on, project-oriented engineer

In June 2012, Patterson was certified by the National Academy Foundation as an Academy of Engineering (AOE). As such, we are the only school in Baltimore City to offer the benefits of both a large comprehensive high school (greater course selection, more AP courses, a full athletics program, multicultural student body) and also the small, close-knit learning environment of the nationally-recognize

d AOE model. Even before becoming an AOE, Patterson was an innovator in engineering and technology. In December 2008, Patterson became the first school in Baltimore to receive national and state certification from Project Lead the Way (PLTW) and the Maryland State Department of Education to offer the nationally-acclaimed PLTW Engineering curriculum, including the possibility of college credit for classes taken while still in high school. We continue to offer PLTW classes as part of our Academy of Engineering.

Patterson High School Academy of Engineering and Technology celebrated 10 years of partnership (2012-2022) with the Baltimore Chapter of WTS (Women's Transportation Seminar), with a field trip yesterday to the development and construction site at Port Covington. WTS organizes the "Transportation You!" Mentoring Program to provide mentorship, hands-on activities, and learning opportunities to girls at Patterson who are interested in transportation, engineering, and other STEM careers. Yesterday's trip included an information session about the development, a hard-hat tour through the construction area, discussion of the transportation aspects of the development (roads, bike lanes, the Hanover Street Bridge), and lunch at Nick's Fish House. Thanks WTS for a great trip and a great 10 years! :-)

Patterson High School students took a field trip last week to Baltimore's Penn Station. The students are all involved in the WTS "Transportation You!" monthly mentoring program for girls interested in engineering, transportation, and other STEM careers. They were featured in the news on WMAR channel 2 that evening: https://www.wmar2news.com/news/local-news/amtrak-and-penn-station-exploring-career-opportunities-for-women

Thanks to WTS (Women's Transportation Seminar) for organizing the trip and for all they do each month to mentor our students. 2022 marks ten years of partnership between the WTS Baltimore Chapter and Patterson High School! Thanks to the Academy of Engineering team at PHS, including Ms. Weldon and Mr. Royster for leading the field trip, and Ms. Ball for coordinating the WTS mentoring program.
