Teach Music to Kids

Teach Music to Kids

Share

Children already are musical—we give them the best opportunity to achieve. They know how to learn better than we'll ever know how to teach them!

A music development sequence for babies to adults that provides the foundation for music understanding and enjoyment throughout life. Studies show BLAH BLAH BLAH. . . Music is deeply personal, so who cares what anybody else thinks about why it should be taught?

Dr. Eric’s Courses 07/15/2025

Last offering for this summer. Read this now.
From a Harmonic Learning Sequence course student:
"Eric's approach to teaching harmonic function is totally inspired. So simple and playful. What a gift to the MLT community to have someone who is expanding the work Dr. Gordon started. (Eric also has a way to help students sort out the modes. Again, such a logical approach.....truly inspired.) Thank you Dr. Rasmussen!! Not only am I prepared to teach my students harmonic functions, but I am ready to develop my own ear for harmony!"
Come learn and play with us in the updated HLS July 2025 class starting soon! Also check out the whole website. It's coming along.

Audiation in the Wild 10/08/2024

Dear and friends,
Our podcast season #4 of Audiation in the Wild started a few weeks ago. We're coming up quickly on *100 episodes*—we're at 96 published—so there's lots to explore in previous seasons!

Season #4 topics include:
• An intro to season #4 with some rather interesting commentary
• The latest neuroscience on practicing. Learn Faster, Perform better [and practice less!] Special Guest: Author, Violist, and NEC faculty, Dr. Molly Gebrian
• An interview with Baltimore native, Keith Fleming, my 1st-grade student, now a graduate of the University of Miami in Music. Way more than a proud teacher moment.

Coming soon:
• Perspectives on current and potential tonal syllable systems with Ron Malanga
• The power and perils of music notation with Eric Bluestine. Ron joins us again.

Please share and we need your ideas and feedback.

To my professional educational tribe members,
Who do you know who is deep in with Direct Instruction or Engelmann's Theory of Instruction? Desperately in need of crazy investigatory shop talk. This person does not have to be in music. Might be better if not.

Love this stuff.

One of my glory moments as a teacher:
So, I saw one of my former students on Facebook— I taught him from 1st to 4th grade in a West Baltimore public school. I saw what he was up to now that he is a graduate of the University of Miami as a music educator and wanted to speak with him. We spoke for 45 minutes. One of the things he said was, “One of the things they were teaching in college was the same as what you taught us in elementary school.” True. Tomorrow morning, my podcast partner and I are going to interview him as our guest. I am excited to hear what more he has to say about . Keith Fleming 😁☺️
