A thought-provoking talk yesterday from University of Maryland, Baltimore Distinguished Scholar Norm Augustine. Glad many of our tenant leaders were able to join.
University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) Distinguished Scholar Norman R. Augustine shared insights with leaders of the UM Biopark and UMB in a speech, “Ethical Challenges in Business and Science,” drawing from his experiences as retired chair & CEO of Lockheed Martin. The most challenging situation is to make the right call when a judgment affects human life or when two of your core values are in conflict, Augustine told listeners during remarks in a luncheon at the UM Biopark on Dec. 11. In a series of anecdotes, Augustine explained how the trouble with ethics is fourfold: One may act w/out realizing it’s an ethical problem; the right course may not be obvious; doing what’s right takes great moral fortitude, and/or doing the right thing may yield undesired outcomes. His advice, among other things, to the biotech and higher education leaders: Ask whether decision makers would mind if their mothers were watching or if they’re prepared to publicly disclose their chosen course. Sunshine helps to , said Augustine. The luncheon included an opportunity for networking at the conclusion of the distinguished scholar’s remarks.
