The Graduate Landscape Architecture Program at Morgan State is pleased to announce the launch of its new Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA) Co-Op Program. Developed in collaboration with professional partners– , , , , , and . this initiative is one of only two MLA Co-Op programs in the nation. Its goal is to enhance classroom learning with hands-on, real-world skills and experiences. Through half-time, paid internships, students in their third year gain valuable exposure to multiple facets of professional practice. The program enables them to develop technical skills, strengthen design thinking, broaden peer and industry networks, and build connections with potential employers –– all while earning academic credit. The Co-Op model is designed as a reciprocal partnership. In addition to mentoring the next generation of landscape architects, professional partners benefit from the opportunity to engage with emerging talent, contribute to the advancement of the field, and foster long-term relationships with future colleagues.
For more information –– including details about participation as an inaugural Co-Op partner –– please contact Graduate Program Director Laurel McSherry ([email protected]).

Morgan State University is now the first Historically Black College or University (HBCU) to lead a solo pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale—an international exhibition drawing over 400,000 global visitors.
Titled ReCall & Response, the pavilion is curated by interdisciplinary artist and architect coleman a. jordan | ebo, who also directed Morgan’s 2021 group showing, WE the 7. This 2025 installation marks a giant leap forward—not only for Morgan but for HBCUs across the nation.
This pavilion also signals institutional muscle. Morgan’s new Dean of SA+P, Dr. Abimbola Asojo, appointed in 2023, brings a global vision to the university’s architectural ambitions.
The pavilion was made possible by a collaboration of Morgan, Tuskegee University, Harvard University’s Faculty of Arts & Sciences, the Cameroon American Council, and local Italian collectives Talking Hands and R3B.
Inspired by the djembe and talking drum traditions of West Africa, the pavilion transforms rhythm into architecture. It uses sustainable timber to create an immersive, interactive structure—a "sonic vessel" that invites communal storytelling and reflection.
This is not Morgan's first appearance in Venice—it was part of a collaborative exhibition in 2021. But this is any HBCU's first time leading a solo architectural pavilion. It comes at a time when global design institutions are finally beginning to reckon with their exclusion of Black voices. ReCall & Response is a profound rebuttal and reorientation.
