𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁, 𝘄𝗲'𝗿𝗲 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸! 🎉

The 2026–27 school year kicked off this week at Baltimore Lab School — and what a start. Orientation welcomed new and returning families for Lower, Middle, and High School sessions, where the message was simple: take a deep breath; you're in the right place. Education here is a true partnership, and we can't wait to build it together this year.

𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗰𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 — students spotting each other across the room, hugs and handshakes, and the happy noise of friendships picking up right where they left off.

By midweek, school was in full swing: Middle Schoolers connecting in get-to-know-you meetings, classes underway, art projects starting, movement breaks keeping bodies and brains ready to learn.

A new year. New faces and familiar ones. Endless possibilities ahead.

Your $55 ticket covers an all-you-can-eat buffet (wings, fajitas, tacos, and more), soda, tea, coffee, and dessert, plus access to basket raffles and our silent auction. There's a cash bar with drink specials, and every play on the big screen.

𝗕𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝗕𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗟𝗮𝗯, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸.

This week our faculty came back for orientation. Head of School, Steve Buettner, opened with what we believe: every child has unique strengths, and every child can learn. Then our Arts team revealed this year's school-wide theme — 𝗕𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗴𝗲𝘀 — and everyone got to work building their own visual bridges, blending two unrelated images into one drawing.

That's the work here. We meet students where they are and build the bridge from there — to reading, to learning, to confidence, to each other. Then we watch them build on their own.

𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝗮 𝘄𝗿𝗮𝗽 𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝘂𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲! 🎉

We closed out our four-week Summer Program the best way we know how — by opening our doors and letting families see the learning for themselves.

Parents joined us for an Open House where they visited academic classrooms to hear what their children read, wrote, and worked through this summer. They watched music demonstrations from our youngest learners and our high schoolers alike, explored the creative art projects students designed and brought to life, and sat side by side with their children as they proudly walked them through their work.

At Baltimore Lab School, summer isn't about worksheets — it's about locking in learning. Our hands-on, arts-integrated approach is built on proven methods that help students with learning differences hold onto skills, build new ones, and head into the school year confident instead of behind. When students make, perform, and create, learning sticks.

The best part? Watching students light up as they showed their families what they accomplished — and watching parents see their children as the capable, creative learners they are.

Four weeks of reading, mathing, making, cooking, splashing, exploring — and a whole lot of laughing. Thank you to every student, teacher, and staff member who made it such a wild time. See a lot of you in a few weeks! 💙💚

𝗙𝗹𝗮𝘃𝗼𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸: 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝘁 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗯𝗲. 🍦

Our Summer Program students picked their own ice cream flavors, researched the recipes, and worked through the steps together — measuring, mixing, pouring, waiting (the hardest part), and finally scooping. Chocolate, raspberry, cookies & cream, and one very enthusiastic mint.🍦💚

It looked like a kitchen. It worked like an executive function lab. Choosing a flavor is goal-setting. Following a recipe is sequencing. Measuring is applied math. Sharing cooking utensils is collaboration in real time.

𝗕𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁? They served what they made and shared scoops with other classrooms.
That's hands-on learning at Baltimore Lab — students with learning differences doing real work and having a great time doing it.

𝗦𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗼𝗻𝗲. 🎶

𝗕𝗶𝗴 𝗸𝗶𝗱𝘀, 𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝗸𝗶𝗱𝘀, 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗴. Summer Program music class last week started on the metallophones — mallets up, one bar at a time, everyone learning the same pattern together. Then the 𝗕𝗼𝗼𝗺𝘄𝗵𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗿𝘀 came out, and the room turned into a percussion section, and a few passes later, a whole range of ages and learners were playing one thing, together.

A steady beat creates fractions you can feel. Waiting for your entrance builds focus and patience. Holding the pattern is working memory. And picking up an instrument you've never touched is easy when the room's already on your side.

🦔🐍🦜 𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝙛𝙚𝙚𝙡 — 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘆 𝗵𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲𝗵𝗼𝗴 𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀!

Our Summer Safari continued this week, as students got an unforgettable visit from the Wildlife Adventures team, who brought a whole menagerie of new friends: a hedgehog wrapped up like a tiny burrito, a very patient ball python, a curious bearded dragon, a sassy parrot, a slippery ferret, and yes... even a tarantula. 🕷️

All summer program students didn't just learn about these animals — they held them, asked questions, faced a few fears, and discovered just how brave they could be. (We hope the animals had fun, too!)

This is what hands-on learning looks like at Baltimore Lab School: real experiences, real curiosity, and real confidence — one scaly, feathery, quilly encounter at a time. 💙
