Imaging Research Center at University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Real-world challenges don’t always live in single disciplines.

Despite the explosion of new communication systems and the torrents of information flowing through them, valuable knowledge often goes unnoticed. It is no longer viable to stick with the status quo when it comes to sharing and understanding this knowledge, especially if it has the potential to make positive contributions to our human experience. Hey everyone who enjoyed listening to our first season of our podcast, Kaleid, we have dropped 4 new episodes in a series we call Making Identities. We worked with 4 young producers—"digital natives"—to help them tell their stories about what it is like establishing who you are when you're smack in the middle of a media landscape few know how to manage. This will be relevant to others in their twenties, but also parents, teachers, and anyone concerned with what new media mean for young folks. This season starts with episode #4. https://www.irc.umbc.edu/kaleid

Kaleid Ep 1: Media History, Media Now

We speak with US Civil War Historian Anne Rubin about the ways different forms of media—from the penny press to social apps—can divide people and fragment ideas. We discuss the challenge of engaging the public in the real complexity of issues given that media prefer tiny sound bites. The conversation turns to the national discord around removing monuments, looking at monuments themselves as a kind of media.

What it takes to make realistic images of the world has changed over the centuries. Once, it was understanding light, form and perspective. Now, it's being able to generate random numbers.

In their article in the Journal of Computer Graphic Techniques Marc Olano and Mark Jarzynski evaluate methods of generating random to achieve realism.

Kaleid provides a window into the thinking of those who research how and why these systems succeed or fail, and those who experiment with new digital media technologies, forms and content that might better serve public interests.
