Middle Grades Partnership

Partnering Baltimore's public and private schools for transformative summer experiences and building friendships across social boundaries.

Middle Grades Partnership is a three-year program for Baltimore middle school students providing educational opportunities, enriching experiences and access across social boundaries through public and private school partnerships.

Students in our Belair-Edison/Park School partnership had the opportunity to explore ceramics with artist and educator Alison Penning. Over four weeks, students learned foundational handbuilding techniques, experimented with clay and glazes, and created individual pieces while working together on a collaborative project.

For the collaborative project, students worked together to create a collection of ceramic faces. Beginning with simple ovals of clay, students added eyes, noses, mouths, hair, eyebrows, and accessories to pieces created by their classmates. The result is a unique collection that celebrates creativity, collaboration, and the individuality of each young artist.

We are excited to share a few of these incredible pieces with you! The full collection is currently being considered for exhibition during the NCECA 2027 convention in Baltimore, with more information to come as plans develop.

Thank you to Alison for creating such a meaningful and creative experience for our students and for helping them see themselves as artists. We cannot wait to see where these amazing faces go next!

Throughout the summer, I have the privilege of visiting all five MGP partnerships and seeing the incredible experiences happening across our programs.

Every summer, there are moments that I cherish...
A new friendship.
A student discovering a hidden talent.
A thoughtful classroom discussion.
A teacher going above and beyond.
A student stepping outside their comfort zone and discovering what they can do.
Those moments remind me why MGP matters.

Bringing middle school students together from partnered Baltimore-area public and independent schools to learn, grow, and build friendships is the cornerstone of the Middle Grades Partnership.

Throughout the summer, our students learned side by side through engaging academics, hands-on experiences, leadership development, and meaningful conversations. Our curriculum and program expectations are intentionally designed to encourage students to think critically, take ownership of their learning, collaborate with others, and develop the confidence to succeed both in and beyond the classroom.

At MGP, we believe that when young people from different backgrounds learn together, they discover how much they have in common. They build lasting friendships, broaden their perspectives, and help create a more connected Baltimore.

Learning didn't stop when our students walked out of the classroom. It continued throughout Baltimore and beyond!

This summer, MGP students explored history at the Reginald F. Lewis Museum, the Lillie Carroll Jackson Civil Rights Museum, the Walters Art Museum, the Baltimore Museum of Art, and the Baltimore Museum of Industry. They challenged themselves on the Ropes Course at McDonogh School, sailed aboard the Sigsbee with Living Classrooms, explored M&T Bank Stadium, and enjoyed adventures at Hammerman Beach, local pools, tubing trips, the movies, and the bowling alley.
Each experience encouraged students to ask questions, build relationships, step outside their comfort zones, and create memories that will last long after summer ends.

At MGP, we believe some of the best learning happens when students experience the world together. Thank you to all of our community partners for helping make this summer one our students will never forget!

While all of our MGP partnerships include Math, English Language Arts, STEM, and LEADS (Leadership, Equity, Activism, Diversity, and Service), our students also enjoy a rich variety of artistic experiences.

Throughout the summer, students explored their creativity by working with clay, learning to play musical instruments, drawing, painting, creating digital artwork, designing posters, making bracelets and jewelry, dancing, tie-dyeing shirts, and so much more. These experiences encourage students to express themselves, discover new talents, build confidence, and appreciate the many ways creativity can bring people together.

Whether picking up a paintbrush, shaping clay pots and masks, performing music, or creating digital art for the first time, we are excited to see our students discover new passions, express their unique voices, and celebrate their creativity.

We are excited to celebrate a special opportunity for several of our students in the Baltimore Montessori/Gilman partnership!

This summer, students in the music class had the unique opportunity to perform with Charm City Bronze, a community handbell choir, during a concert at the Maryland State Boychoir Center for the Arts. Through additional rehearsals and plenty of hard work, nine MGP students took the stage and shared their musical talents with family, friends, and members of the community. It was an unforgettable experience and a wonderful way to celebrate the end of the summer.
Experiences like these give students the confidence to perform, collaborate with others, and discover new passions through the arts.

A special thank you to Mr. Lochte for making this incredible opportunity possible and for inspiring our students through music. We are grateful for your dedication and commitment to creating meaningful experiences that our students will remember for years to come!

What does it mean to be a leader? This summer, our rising 8th graders discovered that leadership begins with recognizing a need and taking action.

As the culminating project for MGP LEADS, students worked in teams to design nonprofit organizations that address issues they care deeply about. Inspired by youth leaders from around the world and grounded in research on their own communities, they developed innovative solutions to challenges such as supporting English language learners, expanding access to college opportunities, promoting mental health, reducing gun violence, addressing homelessness and food insecurity, improving school safety, protecting the environment, preventing drug abuse, and advocating for animal welfare.

At our closing programs, selected students proudly presented their organizations, sharing their missions, ideas, and visions for creating meaningful change.

We are incredibly proud of our students for demonstrating that leadership is not about waiting until adulthood. It's about using your voice, your ideas, and your compassion to make a difference today. The future is in good hands!

What an incredible way to celebrate the end of another MGP summer!

During our closing programs, students from each partnership proudly shared what they learned, created, and accomplished over the past four weeks. Families, teachers, and community members had the opportunity to celebrate student growth while hearing presentations that reflected weeks of collaboration, creativity, and hard work.

From designing nonprofit organizations and engineering solutions to exploring Baltimore's history, creating works of art, developing financial literacy skills, and building lasting friendships, our students demonstrated curiosity, confidence, and leadership every step of the way.

We are so proud of each student, teacher, director, and partner school for making this summer such a meaningful experience. Thank you for another unforgettable year of learning, leadership, and community!

Our students in the Belair-Edison School and The Park School partnership have enjoyed a summer filled with learning, creativity, and discovery!

Each day, students participated in engaging classes, including Math, Humanities, Science Exploration, Ceramics, and Music. Through these experiences, they explored their identities and interests, investigated the natural world on Park's beautiful campus, expressed their creativity, and strengthened their problem-solving skills, all while embracing this summer's theme: Create! Innovate! Elevate! Your Ideas Matter!

The learning continued beyond the classroom with unforgettable field trips to M&T Bank Stadium, a rafting adventure, the Park School Challenge Course, and Hammerman Beach.

As students head back to school, we hope they carry with them the same curiosity, confidence, and enthusiasm that made this summer so special. We can't wait to see all they create, innovate, and achieve during the school year!
