As a Filipino-American student association, it is our responsibility to spread awareness of situations occurring in the Philippines. Currently the Filipino government is working on passing an anti-terror bill that affects all the citizens of the philippines. Due to the fact that this is a controversial and sensitive topic, we encourage our members to research and educate themselves on their own behalf and to take action on their own accord. The Filipino-American Student Association is a large and diverse community with members that may have differing opinions on what occurs back in the Philippines. Nonetheless FASA is an open and safe space for everyone to voice their opinions. We support our members in using their own personal platforms to share their opinions with others and to spread awareness, likewise FASA has many resources and platforms such as our GroupMe, Facebook Groups, and other social platforms for our members to share with others.

Tonight at 8:00-10:00pm EST we will be hosting a Town Hall meeting on Zoom. If you are interested in joining to voice your concern, please feel free to do so. We remind those who wish to join us that this is a safe and open space with facilitators to direct the conversation.

Topic: FASA's Town Hall Meeting
Time: Jun 5, 2020 08:00 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada)

Access to the Zoom Call will be available through our email list and GroupMe.

These conversations can be quite difficult sometimes, but they need to happen nonetheless.

We are the Filipino-American Student Association at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County and we will, and ALWAYS will, stand in solidarity with the Black community, especially in times like these.

“FASA’s mission is to foster a caring community where individuals feel accepted as they are, challenged to be the best version of themselves, and empowered to make a difference.”

Students of the Black Community help to shape our diversity and dive into depths for our Filipino culture. We are honored to have individuals of the Black Community unite with us to create the FASA family.

We already know too well that the world we live in is full of hatred and is incredibly broken. But that won’t change if we don’t support those who are continuously oppressed and whose voices cannot be heard. The recent murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery, have undoubtedly caused pain and heartache, however, it has brought national attention upon the inequalities found through the structural racism that exists still to this day. It may feel safe to be silent about this and naively hope for it to end, but it is our responsibility as a student org to speak out against the ongoing discrimination and injustices faced by the Black community. While we cannot ever fathom the suffering that their community has endured, we know that it would not be right to continue to let it happen.

The truth is, it is selfish to turn our gaze away from these individuals who need it the most. More than ever, we need to show our solidarity with our Black brothers and sisters. To show compassion towards our friends in the Black community, we are relying on our members and our followers to continue bringing awareness to these injustices and also using our voices to speak out when something isn’t right. Don’t be afraid to combat statements of prejudice or racial slurs that were normalized by the generations before us.

Educate others respectfully.
Stay informed.
Give, if you can.

But please, we encourage you to spread kindness by supporting the Black community-- a fellow group of the minority.
We cannot advocate for rights for the Asian community without fighting for justices for the Black community.

Remember to share kindness. Some ways that you can do this are through:
