The September News from the Hill is Here!

Hi Everyone,

I am very excited to share the September edition of News from the Hill. As you will notice our news magazine has a brand new look. The News from the Hill will now be designed using Smore. It is easier to read, and much simpler to navigate. The new format allows us to include all of the items the previous news magazine had along with a table of contents. Parents can easily find what they are looking for, and it is easy to read whether you are using a computer, tablet, or phone.

This first issue is packed with news from around HHA. You will find messages from Principal Hornbeck and Assistant Principal Lucas, updates from our grade level and enrichment teams, information about student activities and clubs, monthly attendance, important September dates, PTO news, opportunities and events taking place at HHA and throughout our community and much more!

One of the biggest advantages of our new format is that throughout the magazine, you will find links and QR codes that can take you directly to additional information, registrations, websites and resources. Please take a few minutes to explore our September News from the Hill!

Dear HHA Families,

Looking for another way for your student to get active after school? We’re excited to partner with Volo Kids Foundation to bring two additional sports opportunities to HHA students this fall: Flag Football and Soccer!

These programs give students an opportunity to stay active, learn and build their skills, and have fun with their classmates after school.

🏈 FLAG FOOTBALL | Grades 2–3
Tuesdays, September 15–October 20
2:50–4:30 p.m.

⚽ SOCCER | Grades 4–5
Thursdays, September 17–October 22
2:50–4:30 p.m.

Registration is open now!

We’re excited to welcome The Language Project back to HHA this fall for another year of Spanish Immersion Club!

Designed to make learning a new language fun and engaging, The Language Project uses a high-energy, immersive approach that gets students learning Spanish through songs, stories, games, interactive activities, and more. No previous Spanish experience is needed!

Spanish Club at HHA

Grades: PreK, K–1, and 2–4
Begins: Thursday, October 1
Time: 2:50–3:50 p.m.
Students participating in Spanish Club will be met by their Spanish Club teacher at dismissal.

Family Advisory Council

Apply for the 2026-27 Maryland State Department of Education Family Advisory Council by Monday, September 14. Provide insight and advice to the State Superintendent on student achievement, family engagement, and key education initiatives.

Register for Free After-School Program

The Baltimore City Recreation and Parks After School Adventures program will run from August 31 – December 18 at locations across the city for ages 5-12, and up to age 14 at some locations.

Ride free with MTA CharmPass

New this school year, City Schools students can ride MTA Local Bus, Light Rail, and Metro Subway services free using the CharmPass app. Families should create an account using the student’s City Schools email before the first day.

Students 13+ should use the CharmPass app, or show a City Schools student ID or valid MTA S-Pass. Students 12 and younger ride free without a ticket, pass, or ID.
