Sisters of the Atlantic-Midwest Province minister in the US, Canada, England and Rome.

We are teachers, administrators and counselors; we are librarians, lawyers and accountants. We are nurses, facilitators and therapists; we are ministers, volunteers and women of prayer. Regardless of where we come from or how we serve, we are all proud members of the Atlantic-Midwest Province.

Many were called on September 11, 2001 – called home to their God, called to be heroes, called to help in any way they could, called to show kindness to strangers. Not long after the tragedy, Sister Laurentilla Back, SSND, was called to offer comfort as a member of the Red Cross’ Spiritual Care Air Incident Response team (known as SAIR). She shares here a reflection on that experience that she wrote on the first anniversary of the attacks in 2002.

Happy 75th Jubilee, Sister Martin de Porres Kimpel!

As a young girl in Canada, Sister Marty was surrounded by the School Sisters of Notre Dame. She attended their schools, admired the women who taught her, and watched her own sister answer God’s call by becoming an SSND herself.

Those faithful women didn’t simply teach lessons from books; they taught by the way they lived. Their kindness, dedication and joy planted a seed in Sister Marty’s heart, one that eventually led her to attend high school at their Motherhouse in Waterdown.

As we celebrate Labor Day and observe the Season of Creation – the annual Christian celebration to pray and respond together to the cry of Creation and the care of our common home - let us be mindful of the connection between Creation and human work. May we recognize the dignity of both, committing to being in right relationship with human labor and the gift of creation.

The Season of Creation is an ecumenical season that takes place every year from September 1 through October 4. It is a time to celebrate God as Creator and acknowledge Creation as the divine continuing act that summons us as collaborators to love and care for the gift of all that is created.
