We just got home from a 2-day training sail on the Schooner LADY MARYLAND where we trained the new crew and prepared ourselves and the vessel for the upcoming overnight programs and voyages to Virginia and eventually to New York and New England this summer.
The crew and I had a blast setting sails, learning the ropes, making dinner and standing watch. We got to set the topsail on Day 1 and spent the night anchored just inside of White Rocks in Rock Creek.
Maybe you saw the world's only pungy schooner out there on the river these last two days?
Photo credit to David Sites for some of the lovely shots of the boat.

On April 7, Living Classrooms launched their 41st sailing season with 75 7th grade students from Hardy Middle School. These students sailed aboard the pungy schooner Lady Maryland, skipjack Sigsbee, and Chesapeake Bay buyboat Mildred Belle. Living Classrooms’ maritime education program serves thousands of students from Maryland area schools annually from April through November as they participate in daily maritime education sailing trips aboard ships departing from the Frederick Douglass-Isaac Myers Maritime Park Museum in Baltimore, MD 21231.

This was the greatest season I have ever seen on our three Maritime Education vessels. We engaged 5,012 students and 9,028 total participants (youth plus adults) during 349 programs for 169 unique schools/groups.
We worked with schools/groups in Baltimore City, Washington, DC,
Virginia, Philadelphia, and ten different Maryland counties.
And the most important event of the 2025 season was the launch of the Francis J. Carey, Jr. Maritime Adventure last summer! We provided two 8-day trips on Lady Maryland for 15 middle school students from the Baltimore region. These programs brought together students from 10 public and private schools.
None of this would be possible without talented captains and crew who are willing to work in the heat, put fish in kids' hands, interpret the Star-Spangled story to be relevant to Baltimore youth, sand and paint the boats, and thousands of other things.
