Join Jordan Riggs from The Campaign for Historic Trades and Kolby Knupp from Iowa's Office of Apprenticeship as we explore how the registered apprenticeship program can support developing tradespeople in Iowa.

Apprenticeships are most successful when they are tailored to local and statewide realities and systems. This session will provide an overview of Iowa's Apprenticeship System, how you can utilize The Campaign's program, and explore how preservation efforts can leverage these effective, bipartisan programs.

It's Preservation Month — and we're starting with the basics. 🏛️

What exactly is historic preservation? It's not about freezing buildings in amber. It's about keeping them alive. Preservation means maintaining original materials, repairing rather than replacing, and protecting the character that makes historic places irreplaceable. It's the craft of letting the past remain part of the present — and passing it on to the future. Swipe through to see what preservation actually involves, what it avoids, and why it still matters.

Historic buildings don't preserve themselves.

Behind every restored cornice, repointed wall, and salvaged window is a skilled tradesperson who knows exactly what they're doing — and fewer of them exist every year.

That's why we built The Campaign for Historic Trades.

This Preservation Month, we're sharing who we are, why this workforce crisis matters, and what we're doing to fix it. Swipe through to learn more — and share if you know someone who should be part of this work. 🔨

Hands-on history in action 🧱

For International Brick Makers Day (May 7), we’re celebrating the craftspeople and preservationists keeping traditional building skills alive through hands-on learning and demonstration.

These clips were captured during an adobe brickmaking demonstration inspired by historic methods used at Mission San José de Tumacácori.

Historic trades connect us directly to the people and craftsmanship that shaped our built environment — and those skills still matter today.
