Hello Everyone………what a wacky winter we are having. One news channel has just said that over the past 8 days, ¾ of the united states received snow!!!
Looking towards spring, our St. Joseph School 28th Annual Road Race in Baltic is a “GO”! We have moved from our usual last Saturday in March to the first Saturday in May (May 1), which will enable us to have as close to a normal road race as possible with warmer weather and not having to congregate inside our gym to stay warm. With CO-VID guidelines, a few things about our race will be different……. here is a quick checklist that we plan on doing:
1. All runners will be required to wear masks when entering the school gymnasium-as will all race volunteers, and masks will be encouraged outdoors when 6 ft. cannot be maintained.
2. Hand sanitizer will be readily available for all runners and volunteers to use within the school gymnasium……but please bring your own as well.
3. Runners will not be required to wear a mask during the race but shall wear masks at all other times including prior to and after the race when social distancing cannot be maintained.
4. We will implement a separate entrance and exit for the school gymnasium to allow for one-way foot traffic.
5. Race-Day registration will be handled with a one-way flow direction with markings for runners to maintain 6ft. distance.
6. We will be considering a staggered start for each race based on # of registered runners to alleviate crowding at the start line. Our timing company will be using chip-timed bib #’s so there will be no need to handle tear-off bibs at the end of the chute and can help facilitate a staggered start.
7. Signage will be made and displayed both indoors and outdoors to help remind runners of all safety guidelines.
8. We will be encouraging pre-registration thru regular mail and online registration-a first for our race.
Raceentry.com is the site we are using for this purpose. We are also putting a deadline for runners who want a tshirt-must pre-register by April 14(Wed.) since there will be NO tshirts available on race moring.
9. Our normal raffle drawing-which is held at the end of the race in the gym-will be done during registration…when runners pick up their bib #, they will be allowed to immediately go to the raffle prize table and pick what they want-which eliminates runners hanging around in the gym after the race.
10. No water-stop at Mile 1 going out or Mile 2 coming back.
11. As for age category trophies for the top 3, we are considering having a table either indoors or out where the results will be posted and then have runners come up and pick up their trophy on their own without an announcement before leaving to go home.
12. As for refreshments, we will not be doing our usual expansive cooked buffet that my wife cooks for our runners-we will provide a simple “Grab & Go” table of individually bagged food, snacks, water, soda, and Gatorade/Powerade; this will eliminate any set-up of tables and chairs within the gym that would normally be there for the sit-down buffet-which will encourage runners not to congregate in the gym.
13. The entire gym will be cleaned thoroughly after the race so it will be ready when school re-opens Monday morning.
I am sooo looking forward to seeing everyone in May-and I am really sure all of you are just ecstatic to get back on the roads and either compete or to just get that all-important exercise to your body.
