Today we took cuttings of our Haygrazer variety trial. The samples will be analyzed for nutrient content as well as to determine yield.

With the recent rains our Summer Annual forage trial is looking good (planted 4/29). We anticipate our first cutting taking place next week. A new addition this year is a variety that is the first commercial prussic acid free variety. We will be testing it for production in our area as well as prussic acid status. As you can see in the pictures there is definitely some differences.

The New World Screwworm has been in the forefront of Ag-related news for the past several months. In order for producers to become more informed about this pest of livestock and wildlife, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service will be holding a live webinar on Monday, June 9, 2025, from 2 PM until 4:30 PM.

Interested participants have two options.

A great visual for w**d control options

The left side was sorghum last year. The right was cotton.

1) The stover/stalks weren't shredded until January, so there was more shading and residue in the sorghum up through early winter (and there is still more surface residue now).

2) Residual activity of Huskie applied in the sorghum (May 2024) may still be at work since we had such a dry year. The few big rains in September and November last fall should have helped break it down, but it will be interesting to see if any HPPD symptoms show up in this year's cotton.

This is a good example of crop rotation benefits to w**d management. Changing up the timings of burndowns, tillage, and residue function... and accommodating more diverse herbicide options (sometimes with residual benefits).
