We decided to go to the pumpkin patch today. Best day ever!

When we got home, my neighbor was talking to me about her son’s education in kindergarten.

Suddenly, we had a Math, Science, Art lesson in her driveway. We ordered the pumpkins largest to smallest, then talked about the “why’s”. We hypothesized if the pumpkins would sink or float, which ones would sink/float, then talked about the “why’s”. I could have added in Writing here but this was a spontaneous activity.

After the hypothesizing, we tested our floating/sinking pumpkins. I will not tell you what we discovered!

Then, we got out the paints and painted our pumpkins.

My point is this…. Educating our children should not be hard. You teach to their style, vary your methods, follow the standards, and wash, rinse, repeat! Just think about what I could have done if I had “planned” a lesson!

Learning has changed over the last few years to being a cookie cutter classroom. But every child does not fit in that mold. Let’s see what we can do about it!

Honesty time….. I taught Kindergarten for 11 years and directed a “graduation” program every year. I didn’t see the need or significance of a graduation ceremony. (Don’t tell my students!)

….. until now! I went to my own kiddo’s PreK graduation today. So much fun and the teachers have done such a great job preparing my kid for Kindergarten! But that’s not the point.

Point is…. Today is the first day of the rest of her school career. She has the potential to be or do anything depending on how she is taught and what she is taught.

We, the parents have 2 jobs to do (the way I see it).
1. Support our teachers. Our teachers are under so much pressure to preform for the county, for the administration, and the parents. We do not need to add insult to injury. Be the parent you would want to walk into your classroom.
2. Educate our children. Trading to them, counting money, telling time, tying shoes, all those little things that we do FOR our kid needs to be taught so our kids can do it. But also, we need to expose our kids to theater, gardening, sewing, fixing things, history, and all the rest.

I challenge you, this summer, to teach your kiddos every moment you have available.

Dear Parents,
I wanted to take the time to remind you that your teacher knows next week is Fall Break. This is the way most teachers feel about this time of the year, I would say.
Your teacher has progress reports, curriculum night, first observation, new students, parent volunteers, and real life students at this point. Yes, your little angel is showing all the characteristics of not being a heavenly being now.
So, be nice to your teacher. Show a little kindness. We are a community working TOGETHER to raise healthy, independent people.
Let’s start a new Teacher Appreciation Week! Show your teacher that you care, know, and understand what he/she is doing is important for all. Bring a coffee, little breakfast treat, lottery ticket, or flowers to your teacher this week. And, maybe some hair care products to calm the frizz!

Just saw this idea on Heather Chavez post. What a great idea!!!
