As fire districts across the state continue to look at ways to maintain services and keep taxes steady, many districts and departments have sought grants. The list of 2026 recipients was announced today!

It is with a heavy heart that we pass along the passing of Commissioner Rudolph G. Sunderman, Ex-Chief and 62-year member of the Mastic Fire Department. Commissioner Sunderman will be greatly missed by all of us at the Association of Fire Districts, and we will miss his smiling face and presence at our events.

Calling Hours will be held at the Moloney Funeral Home at 203 Main St. Center Moriches, NY on Monday 9/14 from 5:00- 9:00, Tuesday 9/15 from 2:00 - 4:00 and then 6:00-9:00. Firematic Services on Tuesday 9/15 at 7:30pm, Class A Uniforms. Church Services will be held Wednesday 9/16 at 10:45 at St. John's Church in Center Moriches followed by burial.

We especially keep Board of Director Rudy Sunderman and his family in our prayers as they navigate this difficult time.

There has been a lot of conversation about pending legislation in NYS that would allow the AHJ to nominally compensate first responders. This currently cannot be done in NYS because of VFBL and LOSAP laws. Unfortunately, there has been a great deal of misinformation and misunderstanding about what allowing nominal compensation means for local departments. On this webinar state officials from the Association of Fire Districts New York State, New York State Association of Fire Chiefs, New York State County Fire Coordinators, Long Island Law and Legislative Committee, elected officials, and other organizations will discuss the concept, explain the legislation to allow it, and answer your questions on what it all means.
