BHI Academy Daily Walk: Learning the Lesson of Receiving
My Dearest BHI Community,
What I'm about to share may perplex you. It may even overwhelm you as it did me when I experienced it.
It was an ordinary Tuesday, and I was doing something typical: grocery shopping in our wonderful Maritime Market on Bald Head Island. My cart was half full. Again, nothing remarkable. I made my way to the checkout line behind a man and what appeared to be his college-age son. As he was about half finished scanning his items, he turned and smiled at me. I smiled back. Simple, polite, you know, the usual southern courtesies.
I then began placing my groceries on the conveyor belt. Again, he turned and smiled. Again, I returned the gesture. And then, something happened that stopped me dead in my tracks, something so unexpected and baffling I truly thought I was being pranked. He looked me straight in the eye, soul to soul and said, “I’d like to pay for all of your groceries.”
I froze. I wanted to laugh out loud even, but that look he shot back said “Don’t you dare.” So, the smile dropped from my face. I stared at him, unsure if I’d heard correctly. “Are you kidding me?” was what left my lips, a little uncertain and stunned.
Jennifer—everyone calls her Ms. Jenn—one of our beloved Maritime Market cashiers, paused mid-scan. We all just stood there, suspended in a moment that felt larger than life.
The man gently shook his head and said, “No, I’m not kidding. I know this might be hard for you. Receiving always is. It was for me, too. But someone did something like this for me. They gave me an extraordinary gift and told me to just say thank you and to pay it forward when I could. So, I’m telling you the same thing.”
I asked him to say it again. I wanted to make sure I heard it right. And he did, with more heart. He said it this way the second time, “It’s hard to receive. But saying thank you and paying it forward will change you. It did for me. I’d really like to do this for you. Will you let me?”
Jennifer and I looked at each other, speechless. And for once, I didn’t argue, I didn’t push back or justify anything. I looked into his eyes, soul to soul, nodded, and said, “Thank you!”
As he paid for my groceries, his son stood beside him, calm and composed as he watched his father with a look that said, “I’ve seen this before, this is just who he is.” And that might have been the most profound part of it all for me.
This experience happened a few weeks ago and I still haven’t been able to stop thinking about it. Of course, I immediately told my husband, family, and friends about it. I replayed that moment over and over. I even paid-it-forward myself as requested. What did his son learn living that kind of life? I know that paying forward is a movement. We’ve all seen the amazing movie and the ripple effect this kind of action can create.
But here? On Bald Head Island? This is often seen as paradise, wrapped in comfort, peace, and beauty. Maybe that's exactly why. Even in a place of perceived abundance, the soul still hungers for grace, for generosity that comes not from wealth, but from the spirit of connection, soul to soul.
I learned that day from a complete stranger, a visitor to our island, a man who didn’t even give me his name, the power of giving with a pay-it-forward purpose. For those of us who are used to giving, receiving—truly receiving—can be transformative.
I took a picture of Ms. Jenn as we watched that man and his son walk away. I wanted to remember every detail: that moment, that man, that learning. Today I want to honor that Mystery Man as a story, a lesson, a gift that begged to be passed on. Yet another bit of magic that happened right here in paradise.
