On 8-21-2026 at approximately 12:30 PM, Mitchell County Middle/Elementary School received six phone calls that started as vulgar comments and later led to the comments of “shooting the school up.” As a result of the calls the Mitchell County School Resource Officers, Mitchell County Sheriff’s Office Investigation Team, North Carolina SBI, and FBI started an investigation with the use of a phone number associated with the calls.
As a result of this investigation a male juvenile from Okeechobee, Florida was located, interviewed, and confessed to making the phone calls. At this time law enforcement is not aware of any connections between Mitchell County and the male juvenile.
At this time there is no creditable threat involving this incident to the Mitchell County Schools. The Mitchell County Sheriff’s Office would like to extend its great appreciation to the Mitchell County School Resource Officers, Investigations Team, North Carolina SBI, FBI, and Okeechobee City Police Dept.

We wanted to make you aware that Mitchell Elementary and Mitchell Middle received some prank phone calls earlier today. Students were not in danger and continued with the day as normal. The matter was reported to law enforcement.They have confirmed the calls came from Florida and are investigating.
