BC’s African American Initiative hosted an event to welcome our Black Scholars to campus. We had a great turnout! Our student panel of Mary, India, and Khalfani provided great insights and advice. Two students Mary and Madisyn won the ice breaker. Angela Williams provided guidance on financial aid and budgeting. Umoja (Professor Kei Ashby), Bakersfield College A2MEND Student Charter (Darius Riggins), and NASSSP BAKERSFIELD COLLEGE (Christina Contreras) presented on cultural resources. All Black faculty, staff, and admin contributed words of wisdom and support. Vikki Coffee made sure students knew BC’s call and response.

From beginning to end, the trip to Ghana was always about the people. Thank you T&G Talking Drum Tours Ltd., Aba Gerri Scott Gerri Fanike Osuntogun Scott, Nii Tetteh, and Rachel for curating an incredible experience for my students! Thank you, students for showing up with open hearts and minds ready to take in all the experiences. We had fun as well as shed tears. Thank you to chaperone Dr. Anderson Brad Anderson who exemplifies that Umoja is a family affair. Much love to ya! Thanks to everyone at Bakersfield College who supported from the Board of Trustees, President Pfluger, to vice presidents (especially Dr. Jimenez). Thanks to the Umoja Community for seeing the value in study abroad and supporting trips to the Motherland with fellowships. The trip was a year in the making and truly transformative.

At the door of no return. Yes, my ancestors are rejoicing that I returned! Returned to honor them, returned to remember them, and returned to re-commit myself to their memories.

For me it was the enormity of the numbers of captured and r***d African human beings. Elmina is just one of the 40 slave dungeons in Ghana. The suffering of my ancestors at the hands of the British, Portuguese, Dutch, and Swedes is hard to comprehend and can’t be forgotten.

Accra, Ghana: Students were welcomed into the community of Larteh and given new names. The chief elders poured libation to the ancestors and provided guidance for living, such as don’t over indulge in anything no matter how good. They tasted salt, honey, water, and liquor. The celebration included dancing to the drumming and eating yam and egg.
