People are more likely to believe false information if it aligns with their social group’s beliefs—even when they know how to fact-check.

Sociologists call this “motivated reasoning.”
We don’t just think as individuals; we think as members of groups. Protecting group identity often matters more than being “right.”

Curious about society’s impact on the natural environment? This class takes a hands-on approach in learning how to address harmful agricultural practices, climate change-induced social problems, and local food shortages. This spring, students can work with the CSUB Edible Garden, United Farm Workers Foundation, and Stay Focused Ministries to help address the interwoven environmental and social issues we learn about in class.
